If you could do just one thing?

So, fellow objectivists, we all agree we are heading in the wrong direction. Here's an interesting exercise. If you could enact one change right now to begin to turn the ship of state in the right direction, what would it be. I'm torn between reinstituting the gold standard for currency (and in doing so, eliminating the Fed) and the REINS act.

I think that the problem you're really dealing with here is human ignorance. I'd love to change all kinds of things, but I don't think any of them would do any good until the people themselves understand what is happening to them. Therefore my change would be this:

That the people of the United States were informed of the ramifications of any legislative action. We need an objective media again. Information is the greatest weapon to combat bad ideas.

require that the first nickel of every federal dollar
spent be used to pay down the debt. . until debt is gone.
with a balanced budget required after that,
except for congressionally declared war, and then
the nickel rule re-engages when we win. -- j

I'd make every institution, every committee, every panel, every elected official, every non-elected official in Washington fully transparent at all times, not just when an inquiry is made. Penalty for non compliance immediate and severe. It's a pity that such a thing would even need to enter the consciousness, but that is our present condition; the lack of honor among men.

Speaking of transparent, let's make sure that Hillary does not get elected. She's a liar, a criminal and just another Obama in a fat pants suit.

      No Hillary in '16.

Repeal the 16th Amendment. If the largesse of our current predicament could be tracked to a single event, it was this Amendment.

Contrary to popular belief, the 16th Amendment doesn't make Income Taxes legal. It was always legal from the beginning. The catch was that Income Taxes collected needed to be spent on everyone equally.

It's no coincidence that when the government could spend Income Taxes on whatever they wanted that things went nuts.

Execute every politician and bureaucrat and consultant acting upon government contract that in any way violates the original limited construction of the constitution. I don't care who gave the order, if you follow it against the 'law of the land', you die, and so does the chain of command above up to the origination of the order.
You are responsible for your actions that undermine or limit the liberty of the sovereign people.
Enough of this dancing to the tune of looters. They fulfill the contract made with the people or they die.

US spends 800B a year, 10X more than China on armed forces.. war has changed as well as technology to do it and response times.. spend 400B a year on what is necessary for protection and response.. the rest bring whomever you have to home and rebuild the aging infrastructure of the US...

Not sure this would be my one first thing, but I definitely agree. How many times have we moved forward with weapons systems the branches don't want simply because it is produced in a certain Congressman's backyard.
