The Hunger Games : Catching Fire / Rated PG-13 for violence, garish costuming and some kissing.

After the blockbuster Harry Potter films began to run out of stories they decided to split the last book in order to keep the cash cow alive and flowing. The Hunger Games Catching Fire is based on part two of a trilogy of stories. Part one made enough money to support the entire world for 6 months and still show a profit. Part two is already on course for a gazillion dollars. The next film would be based on the last book but the studio said NO NO NO, and copied what Harry Potter did. One long film now in production to be released in two parts in 2014 and 2015 . The titles will be THG Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2 based on the book Part 3. All of the original cast will show up watching bigger paydays and instead of banking the money they buy a bank to hold their money. Check the opening weekend box office results and you’ll see that I am correct.

Jennifer Lawrence returns as the heroine and gets to shoot lots of arrows. Donald Sutherland is again the bad guy running the government. Philip Seymour Hoffman is added as an assistant bad guy. Stanley Tucci returns as the emcee of the show. Woody Harrelson is still the coach of the combatants from District 12. Liam Hemsworth, brother of Chris Hemsworth (Thor) shows staying power. Jack Quaid, son of Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid and nephew of Randy Quaid is added as a new combatant. JQ should make enough money from this film to bail out Uncle Randy from all his problems.

The story follows the events of part one and is preceding the events of part three and part four which is really an extension of part three. Things are still horrible in the 12 Districts where all the miserable live. The big city where the elite and the government reside is like Elysium. See prior review on Elysium for details. Through a trick of the government and a rule change, former winners of the gladiator like contest have to return and fight it out again. This would be like telling the winner of the Super Bowl they would have to replay the entire season before they get the trophy.

The first hour and 15 minutes is a lot of anguish, soap opera and misery. The second hour is a lot better. That’s when the games begin. This time everyone is much more experienced. No really young children. Since the games are in their 75th edition even a combatant from the home for the gray and elderly is in the fight. She has to be carried around a lot. Walkers not allowed in the combat arena. She calls all her competitors Bingo. To tone down the violence we don’t see as much of the violent death as the first time around. We just hear the explosions of the death cannon and see the deceased each night in pictures in the sky. Most of the threats to the combatants come from the strange and never ending sequence of natural events which keep them running. Who knew monkeys and fog could be this dangerous?

The film ends with an obvious set up for the upcoming sequels based on a single sequel. THG leading stars and production companies are making an offer on Fort Knox to hold their money.

Rated 3.0 out of 4.0 parts out of 3.0 books. As Harry Potter would say to the cast and crew… bibbidi-bobbidi-boo… more money coming in for you.

The first movie made me yawn.
I couldn't empathize with anybody in the movie, not even the kid from "The Bridge to Terabithia".
I'm not planning on wasting time or money on the 2nd one.

I'm excited to see this movie. Collins was resisted by some publishers, but I am glad she got through the naysayers (kids and violence? nooooo!) and this series was born. the books are great. Jennifer Lawrence makes the movies.

As if having survival skills (or even being AWARE of what survival skills are) is some how going to warp the minds of youth. All part of the wussification of American kids....this all started a couple decades or more ago and now they're adults who vote. I for one am thrilled beyond words that Collins had the where with all to write these books. Important for younguns to contemplate the idea of survival.

The Hunger Games are a huge hit within my family. The children of course were the first to become fans, yet it quickly spread to the adults from the parents to grandparents. I watched the first film myself. I wasn't at all impressed with any of it. Except a glimmer of hope the ideas would have a positive effect on our youth. There are of course much better films such as Battle Royale which deal with similar principles. So I always can hope that these films can be entry points for anyone still not awake. That they might cause a person to have a critical thought.

Regardless, the only reason I wanted to comment was to say that the original poster forgot one name out of the cast that I noticed to be a major omission. She recently shared her birthday with me on the 21st, she has been my favorite actress since 2002 and I felt it worth mentioning she has a role in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. My fear when one of my favorite actors or actresses get major exposure is that they won't be noticed or be appreciated. I thought this almost happened to Maggie Gyllenhaal with The Dark Knight. People noticed her and then they seem to forget her just as quick. Well, the same might be for my favorite actress but I can't wait for the day she is praised for being one of the greatest actresses of all time.

I haven't seen the movie yet so name the actress! And happy birthday!
(Did you read the Hunger Game Series? Or just see the movie? The first part's movie did not do the book justice, as they rarely do...I'm hearing better about this one though.)

right you are, the books are always better. I'm also hearing the second movie is better, so... yes!

I admire the movies because they still entertained most people. Collins did a great job of making her point and infusing it into a story you could enjoy regardless. ultimately, what is most important (to me) is the message. whether that is getting across to the folks seeing it, I'm not sure. nevertheless, lots of people are watching so there is a chance of someone getting it. any movie where the government is the bad guy and the citizens stand up for themselves is good by me.

I must agree. I did not read the books. After Harry Potter came Twilight and then Hunger Games into our family discussions. After Twilight I wasn't about to take a family members recommendation on anything ever again, haha. It's not funny though cause those books are shit. I actually think the first film is more tolerable than the book and it's not worth my time.

Thank you. I turned 30, Jena Malone turned 29.

Ah....did she play the goofy sister in Pride and Prejudice? I guess I could google that answer huh? I'll pay close attention to her today while watching the movie and give you my unwanted opinion of her performance. lol

Indeed, she is in Pride and Prejudice. I would love to hear what you have to say about her performance. I am not a fan of the lead actress though. Silver Linings Playbook didn't help either.

Haven't seen that. Do tell though...what don't you like about her? (I only know her from The Hunger Games). (Pride and Prejudice, Kira Knightly version, is my favorite.)

Jennifer Lawrence just didn't impress me in Silver Linings Playbook and Bradley Cooper showed that he's more of a pretty face than an actor. Cooper had a role I'd like to attempt just to prove I could pull from more than he ever could. It's a phony Hollywood film, what should I expect!

                      You and actor Roger?
Okay Jena Malone was very convincing. She got naked in her first scene, in an elevator. (They didn't show anything so don't go run to the theater.) Although I think the movie adaptation was far beyond what I imagined they could pull off. I remember, while reading it, that it would be difficult to get it on screen as complicated as things were in the story, a lot going on and crazy special effects, but they did very well. And I hope it plants a seed in the younger generation about government intrusions and how important freedom is to retain. I only wished I had the smarts to have rewatched part 1 before I watched part 2.
I haven't seen Lawrence in anything else so I don't have much of an opinion...she's pulling off Katniss I think.

Also, as I always have to try to convince E, Jena Malone is my favorite actress because of her acting ability. She is an actress. Not eye-candy garbage lacking ability and brains. So I would never run for nudity. Though I might for a career defining role but I doubt she'll get that in this. I don't know though, I think she played a villain.

                          Who's "E"?
She's not a villian in this movie. She's a bad ass though. Gotta love that.
(Please tell me you're familiar with this story... I think it needs to be your next movie review...speaking of rational self interest You could dissect the hell out of that...everyone would want to say Katniss was being selfless, willing to give up her life for her family, but can you fight to the death and be selfless, or does that make you selfish for wanting to save your own life (and that of your family), (selfish=rational self interest). Hmmmm

Oh! Erin is your gal? From To Kill a Mockingbird? Cool. She knew her stuff...I was feeling like I really need to reread that book...it's been a while..love it though.
You watched Good Morning Vietnam today? Or was that statement stuck in the middle of that sentence awkwardly because it was something E said? (I don't think I got to watch the end of the review...I was baby sitting and it was getting interrupted a lot...I've been meaning to get back to it. Life is hectic...and short!)

I watched Good Morning Vietnam. Forest Whittaker calls the French Vietnamese women "gals". It's a joke in the movie and found it's way into my writing making me think it was funny.

Life is hectic and feeling shorter all the time.

I believe we're all actors/artists but to answer your question, I gave myself the largest part in my film. I have 25% of the dialogue. I told my cast I chose to do it so no one could complain about having too much to do since no one would have as much as me. The next is 14% then 9%. Something like that. The more honest reason was because I knew I could count on myself to give my best at all times. I find myself very reliable and others not so much. After having half the cast quit after it becoming too much work and too demanding, I am still thinking I knew what I was getting myself into. Though since I don't have much experience acting, I tend to not include it in my bios online. I would rather mention the much more demanding skills as a writer, director and editor. Though after acting while directing the scene, I shouldn't discredit myself perhaps. Its challenging work. Absolute madness with amateurs.

I've said that sentence more than a few times in my life.
Hmmm, you mentioned you were working on a film...I was thinking you were writer director. Anywhere near being finished? Will you have a movie review once it's done? Or do WE get to do that one? That would be fun us....and nerve racking for you. What's it about?

I'm closer than I was to getting it done but I wouldn't say anywhere near being finished. I'm having to do a third rewrite in the middle of filming. I figured I had 25% filmed with 10% edited then I had to stop. Now some of that 25% is scrapped and the 10% edited is still good. Now I have to drop characters, add/drop scenes and rewrite my ending.

As for reviewing it. I only hope I finish it so we can do whatever anyone wants.

As for what it is about, a character based zombie film centered around a meet cute.
