STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND

Quite by accident, I landed in the Gulch at 19. My arrival had awakened in me what I had allowed to fade into the background of my life. It was a thirst for KNOWING, Rand sparked this awakening. Branden then further awakened me to ME. I have remained awake ever since.

The on-going conflict with which the world struggles, represented on one side by the Gulch, is a moral one. Atlas Shrugged is a story of moral values with the characters being a profound dramatization of those values.

It is a long and arduous fight, but it is being won. I am doing my small part.

So are and have you.

Dave Walden

Hell, I'm 63 and didn't read AS until two years ago. But fear not. I was already an open minded Conservative.

I'm scared to even ask what an open minded Conservative is.

OK, here's my version of open minded C. I'm a Fiscal Conservative but I'm all over the map on social issues. Lately Ive been going back and forth on drug legalization. I even wrote a thesis paper arguing drugs should not be legalized. But dammit, the other side makes a lot of sense sometimes. I guess what I really meant was I am willing to change my mind if given good reason. I'm registered as an Independent because I got fed up with all the BS from both sides.

Why do you care what a person puts in their body? Because you know better than they do and using force and making it illegal is the right thing to do? Which is freedom.... it being legal or it being illegal? ;)

I have strong feelings regarding drugs because of my own struggles with addiction. I have been sober now for 15 years. I started out with Marijuana back in the 60's. Then later on I even spent 10 years going in and out of Heroin addiction. I don't believe weed is always a gateway drug but it was for me. Believe me I know how much damage drugs can do. I based that thesis on my own life experience.

The burden of proof should be on those who support drug prohibition to show it's doing something positive and that that justifies the loss of liberty. If we don't know either way, we should err on the side of liberty and end prohibition.

Wow. I am heartened by the response to my brief intro. As a new member I went to the "recent comments" section, wherein I read a simply superb article by WDonway in which he describes his initial exposure to Kelly's "Open Objectivism" (how telling Objectivism had to require a descriptive adjective!).

In any event, I was so impressed with WD's writing and thoughts that it has inspired me to pen my 50 year history of discovery that is my narrative of Objectivism. I shall post this and sometime later this evening post my article here.

Welcome to the Gulch Dave. What a great introduction... Arriving at this Gulch at 19 or the book gulch and you have studied more of Ayn Rand by reading Nathaniel Branden or what I call The Blue Book of articles by both of them... I am so glad that you have continued the search for knowledge on Objectivism... Must be hard at a young age in this world now :)
