My comment on the Yahoo site...

    Alan F • just now

All this really proves is that most corporations in the US have NO thoughts about the need to protect their Intellectual Property from these kinds of hacks.

If they did, the data would be self-scrambling or self-destructing if stolen in the first place.

And the same kinds of safeguards would prevent theft even if the data were transmitted over any internet path.

Maybe this will be a corporate wake-up call for US companies.

But don't bet on it... the credit card data hacks and thefts of the past few years would have all been thwarted if the big finance outfits really cared about their customers and not just saving money on their IT tools. European credit card protection is so far ahead of the US' and the stumbling block, again, is "it would cost a lot for the software and hardware implementation in the US."

Which proves that the banks are not in this for their customers' protection. It's a shame they can't see the value to THEMSELVES if that attitude were to change.

simple motive -- distract from all of the other
real (not phony) scandals which have stacked up
since BHO assumed the position in 09. . these
folks love to pile 'em up and make a rope-a-dope
out of the feeble republican attempts to respond.

I see this as a great goad to Obama to hobble the Internet with regulations. Net neutrality anyone?

Yeah, woman next to me on plane back from Paris last night ran a couple of companies in Russia. She lost $5M in a couple of days, moved some money, and therefore, felt she needed to leave Russia immediately.

    Scary place.

I thought the movie was a pretty dumb idea too.

Think, I'll just worry about Putin and his currency.

Plus, Sony was likely going to take a financial hit on such a dog of a movie. They were probably more than happy to participate and collect on the insurance.

I find it interesting, our governments take on this video compared to the one that caused the attack and burned our Embassy in Benghazi. Why wasn't Susan Rice sent out to all the media networks to guide us on who to blame? I guess in the view of our government Muslins just get more respect than some North Korean dictator.

this story has so many legs that are pushing other more important activities of a negative nature affecting the country. after all is said and done nothing is going to happen to the NK if they actually did do all of this stuff. i don't even feel sorry for the movie going public who have nothing better to do than further shrink their brain in the darkness void.

Why does this whole Interview thing stink of either some black-ops plot by the CIA (nee "Argo"), or a huge advertising stunt by Sony? Has it been produced by "Studio Six", I would not be terribly surprised at this point.

Myriad of motive. They have taken a publicity hit from spying on citizens, back doors in our phones, water issues with their new facility in Utah....you name it. A cyber attack can demonstrate the need need for NSA and their capabilities, and rebuild their public perception. We're extremely short-sighted and forgiving in our society.

Just a theory....but plausible from my standpoint. I believe NSA to be a useful tool that has been turned into a mechanism for tyranny by our leadership.

Not worried, I'm an author of speculative fiction with, unfortunately, a fairly accurate track record when it comes to my projections (so far).

I won't argue the point, since weirder things have happend, but you risk being called a "conspiracy theorist" with this. And we all know there is no such thing as a conspiracy right? Our government is open honest and aboveboard, the Obamanation says so....

Yes, I posted another story that said just that, if they were to release it free, and stream it, it would kick the supposed NK hackers in the face. No theaters to terrorize either.

    I do not buy this.

A short while ago I watched the evening news here in Phoenix. Senators McCain and Flake were talking about how bad a precedent this decision by Sony was setting. They urged the need for more Internet security to prevent things like this from happening in the future.

This clip showed me that potentially the entire matter with Sony is bullsh*t. O has been clamoring for regulation and federal or international control of the Internet for some time. Sony coming under attack in this way is far too convenient an excuse for the FedGov to assert authority into what is essentially a private non-government entity. Because of the subject matter of the movie North Korea is a great scapegoat. Who is conducting this attack? Hmm, who determined that it was North Korea?

I suspect something pretty fishy is going on with the end result of federal or international regulation of the web.

Caving to the ridiculous demands was the worst move possible. It's just as plausible that the NSA perpetrated the hack.

Who did it is not nearly as important as the effect it will have moving forward, the precedent it set. Anyone capable of this will now attempt it seeing that it can be effective. It likely will have a chilling effect on corporate electronic storage and communications. Don't store it or send it if the world shouldn't see it. (Probably a valuable lesson learned.)

Decisions made based on fear. It saddens me that Sony would cancel the release. If the concern is the human collateral, release the movie streaming. Don't allow the bullies to win.
