Some (OK, many) years back I was a teenage boy visiting in a couple of towns over, on the prowl for teenage girls. I was pulled over by one of the local cops on the pretext that I had a burnt-out taillight (I did) but mostly because I had Allamakee county plates and was driving around in Howard county.

In other words, the local cop saw a car and a kid he didn't recognize, so he pulled me over to find out what I was up to.

In the course of the stop he asked if he could take a look in my trunk. I said "No."

"Have you got something in there you don't want me to find?"

    "No."

"Then why don't you want me to look?"

"Because I don't have to. If you think I'm doing something illegal, arrest me."

He wrote me a citation from my burnt-out taillight and told me in no uncertain terms to get out of town. He saw me driving around later that night, still in his town, even made eye contact - and he did nothing. He knew he couldn't make me leave town, and he knew I knew it.

If I could stand up to a small-town jumped-up Barney Fife at seventeen, the people of Beloit sure as hell should stand up to the statist assholes who are proposing to search their homes without cause. This isn't Russia. This isn't China. We still have a Fourth Amendment.

I think they are aiming at parents who are afraid that their kids have acquired a fire arm and want the police to handle it rather having than confronting a gun toting teen themselves. I am ONLY explaining what I think the intent is! Never volunteer to a search.

WTH!! Mr. control freak policeman, your rules have been in existence for over 200 years. It's called the 4th Amendment to the Constitution of the US and it's to be based on probable cause. Don't like it, get another job.

this is either about 1. building suspicion amongst neighbors 2. if you're not guilty why not consent?(coercion) 3. Once you give consent for the police to search your home-they search everything if they have suspicion about anything. Remeber the civil forfeiture mess? what if they find $3K under your mattress or in your sock drawer. that's drug money. They will search your medicine cabinet, they will find a small amount of weed in your teenage son's room...the list is endless...

The anti-gunners will never get it. Gun possession does not lead to violence. The culture, absence of two-parent homes, lack of education, lack of economic opportunity propel these kids toward violence. If their guns were confiscated, then switch blades, baseball bats, and two-by-fours would be used instead.

You're like the king of excuse making for people's stupid decisions.. Maybe maybe maybe... gah! There is no excuse for this! and this wasn't about 'hidden' guns, it's about having guns in your house you don't know about...And when has a toy gun been altered into a real gun? wtf is this guy even talking about? If someone has a gun in their house and doesn't know it... I can't even finish this sentence it's so stupid.

Even if we take the request at face value, law-abiding residents will know more about finding hidden guns in their own homes than an officer. People hiding guns will not volunteer. So it makes no sense. Maybe the police chief felt pressure to do _something_ in response to the shootings, even if it sounds stupid.

I think an interesting response would be:

"I am more than happy to let you know how many firearms I own and of which types, and to that end, I will be open carrying each at any possible convenience.
    Thank you."
