An excellent movie about a small businessman in Canada fighting an out of control building planning board who decides to screw him over when he tries to build a small house on his property so that his wife, who is mentally declining in old age can live in a safe environment with him and avoid going to an institution. You can find the movie on Net-flicks.

By coincidence, I just watched this two days ago. Very good movie. Makes you want to strangle the bureaucrats. The fact that you need to ask permission to build something on your own property is terrible. The parasites in government just can't leave people to be free. I recently bought a parcel in Maine with the plan to build a retirement home. Permits for putting in a driveway, for clearing trees, for building a shed, for digging a basement, for drilling a well, for approving building plans, building permits, occupancy permits .... Regulations about everything,: number of bathrooms, electrical outlets, wiring codes, plumbing codes, fireplaces, heating, .... there is no end. You can't pee without a permit. I'm trying to figure out what I bought when I purchased the property ... I guess the right to be tormented.

You have yet to see how bad it is in Maine. Where are you? The viro pressure groups, which have enormous influence in the state legislature and who are entrenched inside the state agencies, have been trying to get the Federal government to take over 10 million acres of private property comprising about 2/3 of Maine for over 25 years. They have been imposing state prohibitions on use of private property in the name of "zoning" everywhere, but especially in the rural areas and near water. They are trying to depopulate eastern and northern Maine and control the rest.

The whole state has been ruled by progressives for over 35 years. They have driven industry, investment and people out of the state and wrecked the economy with some of the highest taxes in the country and a regulatory regime that is a nightmare. Maine has a small population, a little over a million people, with a vast area in an out of the way corner of the country which most people don't know anything about. Most of the population is in the southern part of the state along and near the coast, practically a suburb of Boston, which controls the rest of the state, subjugating the rural minority which tends to be more independent and pro-property rights and freedom.

I am in NC and the biggest problem we have here is all the Yankees that move down here for the jobs and low taxes....and when they get here they say..."geeze, the taxes are sow low, just think if we raised them just a little we could have better schools, services etc". We of course have to suggest to them that they had all that in the socialist hell holes in the north that they left behind, and that if they really want that GO THE HELL BACK!!! My apologies for generalizing to those right minded northern refugees who add value to the south.

We're in Kennebunkport area ... not on the beach but within a short bike ride. George Bush is about 5 or 6 miles away. He has a nice spot. Too bad he wasn't more like Reagan ... but he looks great now compared to the current autocrat.

The National Park Service went berserk under Bush-I. That was the period when they launched a massive land acquisition campaign across the country to take over hundreds of millions of acres of private property, including about 10 million in Maine. It disrupted the lives of a lot of people who had to fight back. Bush was no friend to private property. Those antics were one of the main reasons he lost his base and was not re-elected.

In this day and age and in this country you don't own anything. You only earn the right to possess it. The government only needs to make a law that says they have a legal right to take it from you, just as they have done many times in the past.

Yeah, real estate isn't a good investment when the gov't can tax whatever they like and you have to pay or have the property confiscated. You don't own anything. You hold title but owe whatever the gov't says you owe.

It is interesting you say that, My niece married a west pointer. The army liked him so much they sent him to law school. He told me that very thing...you really don't own property, you really just own a bunch of "rights" to use the property. You comment reminded me of this.

yep, they have first position rights to your property if you don't pay your taxes. And everything else you have as well.
There was a story a while back about someone that was living off the land in the wilderness, when the government got wind of it they burned down his cabin and charged them, I don't remember the exact charges. But it was rediculous.
The government hates people that know the difference between the illusion of freedom and true freedom.

I will never forget the time I took my 6 year old son to Fly model airplanes on the empty land between 3 different schools one Saturday. They had had something going at the school that day that was over. Some F-ing hag of an "Educrat" marched over and told me to "Get off our land" I asked her just who she thought she was, that I was a citizen of the county and this was public land...un-posted I might add. She shook her telephone at me [as if it was some sort of weapon] and made dire threats about calling the cops. If I had been by myself I would have told her go ahead....But I scuttled off as it wasn't worth the hassle being with such a young child. The fact that this bitch did this in front of such a young child...I mean the supposed reason for the school is "For the Kids" right....was the most shocking thing. I have had a few run ins with Educrats, they always make major noise up front...I think they are used to getting their way by bullying.

I would see if I could get someone to write an article in a local paper or magazine about how model airplanes and quad copters are becoming the modern hobby that gets kids into science and technology. Maybe they would see if they could get a comment about their support for STEM hobbiest kids from the bureaucrat who kicked you off. She won't comment. If you know anyone in local gov't, you could mention how one of their schools was mentioned in local article. I feel sorry of that woman. :)

That doesn't suprise me. It almost seems that they are trying to move to,"Turn your kids over to us, so we can properly raise them", type of system. I'll bet they just loved the concepts from the movie,"THX-1138". and I'll bet they use "1984" as their guide book for what they want.
I find it funny that the "Liberal" establishment is trying so hard to liberalize Colorado, almost like they were afraid of Atlas Shrugged might actually happen. So they are trying to head it off of flooding CO. with extremist.

Just finished it. I agree. One of the best movies I've seen in some time. Disgusting that many communities in America are on the same path.

For the most part true. In my case right now, there was no choice. All the houses on the market at the time of house hunting were in the HOA which encompasses 90% of all the housing in the area. And you can't just buy more raw land, this is Nevada, we are completely surrounded by BLM "administered" public land. It does raise all kinds of issues - from disposition of public lands, to tyrannical administrative bureaucracies, to possible HOA monopoly questions.

Nobody forced you to purchase that property.

This is absolutely true. No individual forced me to purchase the property. But there are real world circumstances. To deny this is to refuse to acknowledge certain realities.

I have been in professional gold mining for over 30 years. Never have collected unemployment or welfare. I refuse to mooch. Nevada is the 5th largest political entity in the world for producing gold. Yes, up there with entire countries. Texas has no gold, North Dakota has no gold, Wisconsin will not allow hard rock mining. We are producers in an ever increasingly over-regulated profession.

To continue producing, I must live here. It would be great if it were a Galt's Gulch and I could contribute to producing the gold and silver to create the true coin of the realm. No one wishes to see Galt's Gulch principles reign in our world as much as I.

But guess what - I am no John Galt. Are you?

Your point is hard but well made. I often hear people say..."well I really have no choice" well you do...move to another state if you don't like it in your own state. That is why we have 50 states...each one an incubator of democracy. Those with high taxes and oppressive government will fail. the better ones wont. That is why federalizing everything is so dangerous. It creates a situation where one cannot escape to another state.

there is a major issue with the federal government not distributing to the citizenry the land in states west of the Mississippi. The founders never intended for the federal government to own any large tracts of property whatsoever. The Constitution in fact specifically deals with this in the eminent domain wording of the Constitution, essentially the federal government cannot take by eminent domain property except for bridges roads fortifications and government buildings etc.(I am ad libbing here this is not an exact quote.)These western states have significant problems because they're not generating any tax revenues whatsoever on this federally owned land, whereas if it was privately held land there would be property tax revenue to pay States cost and services.

Property taxes are not the reason for private property and the impact of Federal control of the land is much more serious than that.

As a secondary issue, property taxes usually pay for local government, not state costs.

"property taxes usually pay for local government, not state costs" You are correct however.. That is the beef that the local governments have is that they can't get that revenue. The state is impacted because 1. There are less people in the state because all the land is tied up and 2. They have to build state highways through uninhabited areas that have no taxpayers.

They are not supposed to "get the revenue". Most local property taxes go to the union/public school monopoly. In the northeast it's typically about 70%. Federal control removes private property rights and the private economy. The lack of local property taxes is the least of the reasons to stop Federal control.

Indeed. And the topic can get as deep as you want it. There is the Constitutional Doctrine called the Equal Footing Doctrine, which maintains that new States admitted to the Union are to be admitted on the same footing and equal to the original 13. So the Enclave Clause which you quoted for the language regarding forts, dockyards, post office blocks, needful buildings, etc applies to all States. There has been great mischief along the way.

To be on topic, I ordered two copies of Still Mine since my last post. Appropo. Thanks for bringing attention to it.

Excesses of what progressives call governance is everywhere, our town is trying to make money by selling electricity, imagining some huge windfall from the margin between some third party supplier and the power company, all with a seventy year old delivery grid design. Just wait till the next storm when they find they've got to repair it all.

If you're looking for action entertainment, this is not the movie to watch. If you're interested in a good story, with good acting, based on real life events, then you'll enjoy this one.

I particularly liked the husbands character. He was just like my farmer father in law from NC in his desire to do what he could to get by and make his situation better for his wife and to get along the best he could. He was just like my father when he was working on a project...way over thinking and engineering everything. Even items that xcould just be knocked together were done with meticulous care and planning...just for the personal joy of doing it. Other details were excellent in the movie...like for instance the wood used in the house. They used actual sawn, un-planed 2X4s. My brother in law has a portable band saw mill and makes lumber just like this. All my father in-laws barns are built of it.

Watched it last night..........excellent! Would like to know how much play it gets (possible).....and how many "get it" (elusive).....and how many liked it (outside of The Gulch)....(probably impossible).

Footnote: The actor who played the building inspector could have been well cast as one of the moochers/looters in AS 2 or 3.
