Thor: The Dark World / Rated PG-13 for violence, confusion over who is who, since people keep turning into other people and kissing, although you are not sure who is kissing who.
Thor is back and brawnier than ever. More and more ladies are showing up as if Jack from Titanic were somehow reincarnated as Thor. Thor is played again by 30 year old Aussie, Chris Hemsworth. He is big. He is tough. He has a big hammer. It flies around and always returns to him like an Australian Boomerang.
As always, big events are in the works. This time some kind of icky red stuff called the Aether, that has a lot of power, is why. It possesses Thor’s girlfriend and she faints a lot. This is because the Aether was trapped in a big square rock but she stuck her hand in a rock crack and now has problems. The bad guys, led by Malakith who wants the Aether, consists of evil elves. They look like pointy eared guys from Vulcan who Spock would disown as relatives. Thor must fight them and save his girlfriend from fainting.
All of the above must be accomplished quickly since a bunch of galaxies or something is about to align which makes the Aether all powerful and then really super duper bad things will befall everybody who is not evil. Once again big stars like Anthony Hopkins (Odin) and Natalie Portman reprise their parts, even though in some cases they got killed before coming back to life. Thor’s nemesis, his brother Loki, is now locked up in a jail cell that is comprised of see through bars. Thor lets him out so they can fight the Aether together.
Giant and stupendous special effects make up what’s on screen. Every so often the characters pause to discuss things but never more than a couple of minutes go by before lots more fighting and explosions occurring as we watch ugly elves get beaten back by Thor or Odin. Brian Tyler provides an effective score but like the actors, the music is constantly over come by the massive special effects.
Watch for Marvel Comics Stan Lee who turns 91 December 28th appear and utter a line of dialogue in the old folks home scene. After the credits roll stay seated. A new character played by Benecio Del Toro makes his first evil appearance in a short scene. There is another scene even after that one. Stay put. The film also has a 5 minute preview for Captain America: The Winter Soldier (opens 4/4/14) attached to the beginning. The Captain also makes another surprise appearance somewhere in the story. Can’t tell you where. His appearance heralds the fact that despite all the serious big events, this movie keeps it’s sense of humor as in the 1st Thor film. Thor will return, apparently in another feature and will make an appearance in the next Avengers film currently titled The Avengers: Age of Ultron due out sometime in 2015. All fine by me. I like Thor. Long may he flex.
Rated 3.5 out of 4.0 reasons Chris will make the ladies forget all about Jack.
