Where's the uproar among the Left? Does anyone recall "Hell no, we won't go!"? I guess compulsory service that's recommended by a Lib is ok right?

Being retired from the military, my experience says "NO!" to such a proposal. Forcing young people to be in any organization when they don't want to automatically ensures a negative, rebellious attitude. Furthermore, given today's very highly technical information and weapons systems that our Armed Forces use, means mental discipline and longer periods of training are required in order to be productive troops for any war effort. A rebellious and resentful attitude by any trainee will only prove disasterous for any Service.

Is it not a blatant contradiction to subject one unnecessarily to involuntary servitude, slavery and threat of death in order to protect Liberty and Freedom? No a volunteer force is the best. Involuntary servitude regardless of duty is slavery. Rangel is impenetrable. His contradictions are as numerous as his words.

Seems to me we have plenty of volunteer organizations to direct "public service." It's never about the stated, its always about the hidden agenda. Drafting and directing young adults to do the biding of Congress is yet another form of enslavement, not patriotism.

Wrangle not only served with great distinction in the Korean War, but volunteered to boot.

Nevertheless, while some sort of public service should be considered a citizenship obligation by all Americans, except for a national emergency, obligatory service is completely inconsistent with the concept of a free society, and prohibited by intent under the 5th and 13th Amendments, if not by implication by the entire US Constitution.
