Backup to an offline drive and keep it safe, then no worries. But yes, it gets worse and worse and you never see any prosecutions. Eric...oh Eric... did you show up for work this week? Still in Missouri? Guns anyone?

  It depends how you do your backups, and how the particular ransomware works. It is entirely possible for some variants of ransomware to affect typical backup methods.
