Vacuous Ciphers
Jofi Joseph, a National Security Council expert on nuclear nonproliferation, was recently fired for his Twitter feeds, which made not always kind remarks about people within the Obama administration. One in particularly appears to have stung. He called Obama consigliere Valerie Jarrett a “vacuous cipher.”
As Darrell Delamaide, a columnist for MarketWatch, pointed out, the term is an apt metaphor for the entire administration, but why stop there? Vacuous is defined as “having or showing a lack of thought or intelligence; mindless,” while a cipher is “a person or thing of no importance, esp. a person who does the bidding of others and seems to have no will of their [sic] own.” Haven’t those terms characterized most of what passes for politics and political thought for many decades?
