Last Vegas / Rated PG-13 for partial nudity, language, drugs, alcohol, gambling, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas doesn’t it?
Most circles of discussion think this is a film that could be a geriatric version of The Hangover. Yes and no. It does feature mainly older Hollywood Superstars but only one hangover is seen and it seems to wear off after about 5 minutes. The geriatric party goers include, in order of age, Morgan Freeman (76), Robert De Niro (70), Michael Douglas (69), Kevin Kline (66). Watch out Las Vegas. Can you handle these guys?
Storyline. All 4 were best friends as kids. We see that in early scenes. Then 58 years disappear and we see them as folks who keep in touch but live far apart in different states and different life styles. MD is the only one who never married and lives the California lifestyle in Malibu. He decides to get married to a 31 year old. This leads to a bachelor party in Vegas.
There was a conflict between RD and MD years back. RD doesn’t want to go to the party but eventually shows up. Complications ensue, some funny, some dripping with soap opera. Early on, they meet up with a lounge singer, who herself is no spring chicken. But very cute. Mary Steenburgen (60) plays the close to Social Security chick. The guys party out as best they can. A little gambling. Some drinking. Pool parties. More drinking. RD and MD seem like they will never get along. MS has her eyes on the rich and still cute MD. More conflict between RD and MD.
All this leads up to a big party and the pending nuptials. While the storyline could be better, the high powered but elderly cast rise above the material to convince us that friendship that lasts is what this story is all about. Not hangovers. Competition between RD and MD over MS seems to be reaching a fever pitch when an event from the past is revealed and changes everything. Time for another drink.
While this film with a different cast probably wouldn’t make the grade, the 4 main stars are all Oscar winners. They turn out to make LV a winner, just not a major one.
Mr. Douglas made his film premier as an uncredited jeep driver in a film from 1966 starring his dad. Good to have connections. Mr. Freeman started out in a TV series in 1964 playing a doctor. Mr. Kline started out in a TV soap opera which was also the debut of Don Knotts but not the one you are thinking of right now. Mr. De Niro began in a low budget black and white film in 1965 in which he was one of two on screen performers. Now they are all playing geriatric party goers. Shows you can reach the Hollywood heights no matter how small your start.
Rated 2.9 out of 4.0 reasons to drink less and exercise more. In 2013 an 84 year old set the senior citizen Marathon record with an under 4 hour time. An 80 year old climbed Mt. Everest for his 3rd time; his first two being at ages 70 then at 75. Now they want to go into movies.
