Hard to believe the game of football was almost stopped by Progressives. Interesting history of the game and how Progressives think.

yes, yes, yes. we're season ticket holders for our local team. you can always tell when someone is new to the game when they look away and squirm before a hit. I remember the assault issue; if they ever allow law enforcement, the game would be destroyed. the league is making plenty of rules to decrease potential injuries, including roundabout ways to get fighting out of the game. I don't think it's going to happen.

The helmets have been a topic of discussion. As they become better at preventing concussions they also become a weapon. I stopped watching this year cause the Steelers suck.

I stopped watching Pro football some time ago because it became too formulaic and boring for me. College followed not long after. The forward pass had something to do with this.

In my opinion they should reduce the padding, as I think they should do with boxing gloves. I think going back to the era of leather helmets and thinner pads would add a lot back to the game. Not only would players be more careful for fear of feeling pain, but it would lessen the advantage of mass.

That must have been a traumatic event for her. That was after they supposedly took some of the brutality out of the game. I just remembered another interesting sports event. A number of years ago during an NHL hockey game one player hit another player in the head with his stick. While fighting is tolerated this type of attack is not. The player was suspended but many fans wondered if he should be charged with assault. The NHL felt law enforcement should stay out of it. Others said if he did that on the street he would be arrested. Made for an interesting debate.

my grandmother's first love died while playing a high school football game in the early 20s. She had kept these letters he had written her all her life. She was buried with them. ultimately, if football becomes another game in the name of safety, it will be due more to our litigious society than anything else.

I was not aware of the history. It made me wonder what would happen if football was just getting started today. I can't imagine any new sport continuing if someone died while playing it.

it was an excellent article. I think Hillsdale does an excellent job of fighting the philosophical war in this country.

have I told you I hate football games? You'd go and get settled into a really good discussion with someone when all of a sudden someone makes a play and everyone around erupts into a deafening frenzy and by the time everyone sits down you forgot what you were talking about
