Common Core Standards will further harm US History instruction

This is some information about how the Common Core standards are being implemented in the subjects of English and History classes. This gives a better explanation of what I had touched upon in a previous post. I agree with the concerns, as I have asked my own children about what they learn in their history classes. Which have only been social studies classes until this year. My son is in Honors US History, and thankfully has a wonderful and enthusiastic teacher. Plus, it's my job as a parent to teach my kids things they should know. They will not grow up ignorant of the facts surrounding the formation of this country, and what fierce determination, strength of character and unwavering belief in the rights of man to be free from oppression in all forms.

I also hope this leads you to further research about thi subject. It's eye opening, to say the very least.

Common core is pushing other subjects out of the school day. In my area, they are already starting to drop Music, Art, Gym, and Science(!) from the school day or only doing those activities once per week so they can spend all the time doing test prep (Common Core State, ugh). History has been on the decline for a long time as far as time dedicated to basic curriculum. It's great that the AP history exam is still out there but most kids get very little history instruction. Fortunately, you can learn a great deal about history from books. As long as a child is a good reader, have them read interesting books about history. History has a bad reputation for being boring but it isn't! It's high drama and high stakes. Try watching "Horrible Histories" from the BBC, you can catch them on Youtube and Hulu. That show makes my laugh so hard it brings tears to my eyes, but I have also learned a lot from it. Here is a sample that I really love, seriously you should watch it...

It is sad, I taught US history my first three years and I was frequently calling out the textbook as government loving, manufactured lies. I'm glad I'm on to AP gov, Econ, and civics, but social studies teachers have definitely become English teachers.

I would not want to trade with the math teachers who are under the direction of the State.
    Well it's a beautiful day.
