On one hand they say the virus is very delicate and dies off quickly. On the other hand it is resistant to freezing. And likely spread through the movement of the corpses into other areas to be buried. So it doesn 't necessarily die with its host. There is conjecture about airbourne but no independent confirmation.
Chance of death appears to depend on where you are. In a small town in Nebraska today the chances are likely very low. In Sierra Leone the chances are much higher today. Assuming the medical profession and government agencies continue to act irrationally reagrding people who have been in the stricken areas, the chances in the US will likely rise,
I have not seen stats on how likely exposure to ebola results in the disease, but apparently about 50% who do get ebola are expected to die. One may contract flu(s) dozens of times over the years and recover one's health. If ebola was as widespread as flu in the west there could be victims stacked like cord wood in the streets. There appears to be little valid reason to compare the chance of death from flu to ebola in the US today.
Fatality rate from airplane crash is pretty high also. I wonder what the fatality rate is for our "policing" of the Middle East (apparently a permanent bad habit). But you might be right that the fatality rate is the reason the press and politicians (and forums) get so worked up over it.
Certainly does not appear to be the actual chance of death from the disease - you are 100 times more likely to die from the much more contagious flu.
she acted as an adviser to the World Bank. You can't ignore it exists if you're an economist. Her thrust is freer markets in emerging nations. she's big on stopping most of our charitable assistance to those countries. The World Bank loves it when we all give foreign aid, especially to Africa. The TED talk featured on her site was only 16 minutes and pretty interesting though I disagreed with some of her conclusions regarding China's economy.
Primarily the fatality rates, and secondly the symptoms displayed. (imo) With Malaria the carriers have been controlled (via pesticides) in western countries reducing the fear factor.
Still trying to understand why Ebola is causing such fear and attention vs. Malaria and the Flu kill which kill so many more people per year in the world (and the US) than Ebola. Malaria and the Flu deaths are just staggering : Malaria 600,000+ influenza: 400,000+ . Ebola...3,500. Wash your hands and correctly use DDT.... if death is the actual concern.
I have two thoughts on this situation: First, our ignoble president wants the African countries to do the screening so he doesn't have to spend the money to supply the TSA with screening equipment. Second, that the virus will mutate and become airborne in the US so he can declare marshal law so he can take all our guns away. Or maybe we'll become Z-Nation.
... why not? Because the symptoms don't always show up in 3 days... isn't the incubation/symptomatic/communicable period something like 2-3 WEEKS?
.... if anyone has the space and resources to implement that 'solution'? Especially the Ebola-torn countries with their plethora of available cash and resources?
Here's the comment I posted on that site in reply...
"Thanks, Bobby... and will your legislative ban include everyone who may have started their air travel in an Ebola-affected country and then flown through ANY OTHER country on the planet?
Here's hoping for ANY better-thought-out, simpler and more-effective "idea." "
If the UN wasn't the useless organization it is they would have had the WHO institute a travel ban under their aegis. Instead everybody waits to see what the G-20 countries do.
In the meantime ineffective measures are put in place for screenings that do nothing of the sort and infected people are able to move about more or less at will.
So now we already have at LEAST one infected person getting through the the bad joke of a security program meant to contain Ebola.
If you don't contain flights, you don't contain the spread.

While Ebola victims have a better chance of survival in the USA it is only common sense to keep persons coming from the African nations where it is rampant from entering the country. However, commons sense is not a commodity easily found in the Obama Regime or the demon-crat playbook.
During an interview, the head of the CDC was asked why not temporarily ban travel from West African countries? He gave the standard approved answer, however, there was a slight hesitation to respond and his expression was one which revealed he agreed, but could say so in public.
If a person shows symptoms within 3 days of exposure, why are we not placing people who have travelled to exposed areas within that timeframe in quarantine?
But comrade citizens, do you not want to partake of the candy mountain dream of a heaven on earth Socialist Utopia? Wheeeeee! You see, comrades, our more than equal elite betters can achieve this feat where other countries have fallen short. Why? Our intellectual superior Marxist leaders can do no wrong! It is racist to disagree. Why other than that? You have better watch your doubting Thomas step there, bub, but the key is no exclusion of countries. The candy mountain dream is a borderless New World Order where every one on earth gets a slice of the spread the wealth around pie. And you can bet all those radical Islamists will just love us for that and put down their arms. They shall actually give us hugs without blowing themselves up. Ain't all that butterfly and lollipops peachy keen?
