The Balance of Power
As with any adversary, there is no mutual respect without a proper balance of power. That notion is as clear as day when referring to the Constitution.
The Constitution clearly grants its government the powers to establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.
What's glaring is that the last clause is directed to “ourselves and our Posterity” and elicits us to secure a proper balance of power between government and the People.
