It was hard to avoid smoking in the '50s and '60s when it was being promoted heavily by doctors and Hollywood. I managed to kick it in the early '70s after I left the Navy. It was hard to avoid in the Navy because we could get sea store cigarettes which avoided all the taxes for $1 per carton.
