Lots of smelt in the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence river. One year there were so many as we were motor boating near the southern shore of Lake Ontario (between Braddock and Irondequoit bays) they were actually jumping into the boat when we passed over a school of them. Sometimes the beaches are loaded with them. No danger of them becoming extinct at this time that I know of.
