Excerpt:
"Buried within the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that was just passed in both the House and Senate is an amendment which aims to prevent any future president from withdrawing the United States from NATO.

One of the legislation's co-sponsors Tim Kaine (D-VA) described that it "reaffirms US support for this crucial alliance that is foundational for our national security. It also sends a strong message to authoritarians around the world that the free world remains united."

Of course, none of these Democrats and Congressional hawks are worried for a moment that President Biden would ever entertain the idea of leaving NATO, but this is certainly a scenario Republican presidential nominee frontrunner Donald Trump has floated at various times over the years. The bipartisan legislation was also led by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida.

Trump has in recent weeks said it's something he would consider if reelected to office. He's long called the Western military alliance which stood down the Soviet Union throughout the Cold War a "paper tiger" at this point.

He spent his first term aggressively denouncing NATO members which had failed to meet the alliance's commitment to spending at least 2% of GDP on their defense budget.

As early as the year 2000, Trump has been on record as favoring the idea, for example writing in is book The America We Deserve that "pulling back from Europe would save this country millions of dollars annually.""

More like hundreds of Billions would be saved.
NATO dragged US into $100 billion wasted in Ukraine to fill the pockets of the corrupt pols in Europe and US and bailed out the munitions companies. NATO NIFO

Looks like someone is afraid of Trump ruining the war machine. They're tying Gulliver down every minute before he is possibly in office. Tying the whole Nation down to the ground and under.

NATO was formed, supposedly, to counter an invasion of Central Europe, by the Warsaw Pact.
    The Cold War is over.
The Warsaw Pact is no more.
    The Soviet Union is gone.
Why, then, do we still have NATO?

Me dino most certainly hopes some courageous heavily embattled soul wearing a hero's orange 10-gallon hat has "have only begun" to do something about all the powerful totalitarian evildoers who infest to erode what used to be a lawfully functioning Constitutional Republic.
Yeah, those same falsely accusing (and example making by banana republic arresting) termites who keep chanting how much they want to "save our democracy" to keep flimflamming all the low information voters.

It could be simpler than your question, consider FFA's words "gravy train". The strength of the push depends on the influence of the armament industry in each congressional district.

Pretty sure that’s unconstitutional. It is the executive branch alone that determines relations with other nations. Congressional authority is limited to approving the action. A president could attempt to withdraw from NATO but it would be up to congress to ratify the action. I don’t think Congress can lock in a treaty that would hamper future Congress’ from voting on maintaining the treaty.

Constitution? What Constitution? The only time the commies in charge care about the Constitution is when it can be manipulated to increase their party’s reach and power. Otherwise it’s just a smudge of ink spilled by old dead white guys.

I have to admit I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, all treaties have to be ratified by the Senate so it makes sense that treaties should be nullified by the same count. On the other hand, NATO specifically has several clauses which dictate minimum spending levels of its members in terms of common defense and nobody but the United States has been holding up their end of that. So exiting NATO is completely justified by those terms alone.

I'd love to see the United States go back to the policies of George Washington who advocated against "entangling alliances" - especially with Europe. NATO was a product of WW II and that solely because Democrats like FDR wanted to support the communist Russians and pansies like Truman didn't have the guts to fight them. NATO was a symbolic gesture, but has long since outlived both its usefulness and its purpose.

NATO was formed against the USSR

i've not seen the USSR since 1992....

i just bought a table top game called Harpoon 5
    naval type war game

the Russian Navy is a shell of what the Soviet Navy used to be, it is not a threat (baring the use of strategic nuclear weapons) to the United States

Russia is no threat to Europe, with the Germans with their Leopard 2 tanks.

all the Warsaw Pact nations now stand in the way of Russia instead of being their allies
