The automatic I think you're talking about is the M1911, which was the US Army issue officers' pistol from WW1 until about 1970. It was designed by John Moses Browning, in response to a request that arose in the Philippine Insurrection after the Spanish-American War. There, we fought the native Moros, who I don't think were Muslim, but who were tough to put down because they would get high before going into battle. So the Army asked Browning for a round that would knock a man off a horse. That round was the .45 ACP, not the same as the .45 Colt.

Not arguing here, mshupe, as I know it's common to credit "Islam" with a so called Golden Age, but I personally don't buy it. IMHO (with a few bucks can get you a cup of coffee), Europe was in an upheaval of its own at the time, but Islam was just as nasty. Giving Islam credit for things such as algebra (which really originated in the Indus Valley) and items that came through Islamic lands from further East may have made it look "Golden" to Europeans and it was so named and we have it in our history books. The way I see it, Aristotle has as much in common with the Koran as Ayn Rand has with the Communist Manifesto. Giving credit to Islam for various things is like giving Christianity (Christendom, really) credit for things like calculus, the printing press, the telescope, and steam engine.

Since the end of WWI we have tried to have civilized war and this is an oxymoron. When it comes to war the only way to truly win is the have total war. I understand that with the advent of nuclear weapons that this is potentially horrific but if war is necessary holding back is wrong.
