The Movie "American Made"

I just watched the movie for the second time and thought I'd share here. I think this movie is in the top few on my list. My dad was a pilot and I am. Years after it happened he told me that he had been offered a job to fly drugs from Mexico into the US. As far as I know he didn't do it. But, my dad had a little more grifter in him than I do and sometimes I have to wonder. He did also mention to me that he'd sat by the Salton Sea at night and listened to the aircraft running drugs flying up the sea very low. It was below radar from LA Center so they'd turn their transponders and lights off and scoot right up, probably with cocaine and weed. Anyway, if you haven't watched this move I'd suggest getting cozy on the couch with popcorn and checking it out. I think a lot of you will enjoy it.

Over the past couple years I've become a pretty big fan of Tom Cruise. Happened to hear commentary recently on how much he's a workaholic. It shows in his work, I think.

I've learned not to judge people based on what's reported about them. It has to be overwhelming before it even registers with me. Almost always I need some sort of first-person info. On Tom Cruise I actually have some of that. A good buddy of mine I grew up with and played high school football with spent the better part of an evening with Tom. It happened because my friend had made a friend in college in Santa Barbara. One weekend this new friend invited my friend down to his family's home in LA. Just so happened that this family was friends with Tom Cruise. My buddy was laying on the floor of the living room watching tv when the doorbell rang and his friend went to answer the door. Next, he heard his friend say, "Dave, I want you to meet my friend Tom." My buddy turned around and standing on the other side of the sofa was Tom Cruise. This was about 35 years ago - not long after "Top Gun". Tom was there to bring a gift for their daughter who was dealing with a health problem. My buddy got to chat with Tom for some time that night and said he seemed like a very nice, salt-of-the-earth kind of guy. He sure doesn't seem like that to me from what I've seen. But, I never forgot that story. Unfortunately we lost my friend about ten years ago. I really don't give a shit about somebody's religion unless they're a satanist. I have heard one other thing about Tom from a very good friend of mine who worked in Hollywood for about a decade. No need to repeat it here. Rumor. I would assume that he actually is an odd, somewhat eccentric workaholic. He's an aviator and that does mean something to me, as I'm one also.

I think that a lot of B.S. about people who are famous gets legs and, as some sort of odd propaganda, has an effect. I've seen it with some pro golfers. Things get repeated. According to some I'm some sort of x-rated playboy who's slept with many beautiful women in my old town. Most of my life I couldn't buy a date. I'm an engineer and still scared of women...haha...

I grew up in Baton Rouge and still live there.

Barry Seal flew promotions for a local radio station, that's how he got his start in flying.
The federal judge here set him up to be assassinated.

It's a good thing we are all entitled to our own opinions here. I have watched most of TCs movies and although he is a great actor I consider him a pompous ass.

Is that from direct experience with TC, or are you saying the characters that he portrays are a$$e$ ?
( I have the same opinion of a couple other "actors" that, imo, are not good actors because the characters they portray are all the same and all are a$$e$.)

FFA, great point. I try to reserve my judgement of others until I see the behavior itself. (Just think of all the TDS people who think Trump said things he never said... Tiki Torches).

That said. Fan of TC and his movies. His ties to Scientology are a HUGE red flag for me. But it was some recent clips with him berating the people that work for him. It's a rough edge. MAYBE that was an accident.

But he does come off as WOUND TIGHT... Even the conversation about the House/Fridge/Dishes (while I have OCD, and tend to be more like Tom)... It's a sharper edge... And I KNOW I ANNOY people around me. LOL.

In his defense. you don't know what that level of fame can do to you UNLESS you lived it. From the outside it seems "great", but it's not all roses when people can recognize EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE every time you go out. Not everyone is a fan. And have you NOTICED the Whacko Count lately? LOL...

Agreed. If all day long every day moronic "reporters" keep bugging one about your 'religion',
one might reach a point where a one over-reacts to an innocent comment.
I have some long time friends who had some 'courses' of study at a Scientology center 30+
years ago and they noticed big changes in the organization (notably after the IRS
prosecuted the 'church'.) I have no direct experience or knowledge otherwise.
Given how the media has misinformed everyone for years regarding many things,
including everything to do with the Waco religious group that the FBI murdered
in '93, I have doubts about the media's reporting regarding Scientology, too.

            Agreed... Especially about WACO.
But in this case, AFTER Scientology become a "Religion" in the IRS's eyes... It got worse.

I indirectly knew someone who left... And they effectively had to go into hiding.

            That's when I learned...
You can tell a Cult... By how they treat their EX Members... LOL.

I will let that evidence stand on it's own. Although I did read dianetics, and a couple books by ex-members, so I admit my bias is strong...

Neither! I don't know him but have no issues with the characters he plays. It goes more towards his "Little man complex" and his political/religious views.

Thanks for the clarification. I have no direct knowledge of TC, his 'religion', or political views.
To my knowledge, he has not been vocal regarding his politics, however, unlike many others in the entertainment business.
According to this link, TC has supported both major party's POTUS candidates with small donations, but has indicated
his respect for the policies of Pres. Ronald Reagan.
