Celebrating the Constitution
To commemorate the September 17, 1787 signing of the Constitution of the United States, Congress has designated September 17th of each year as CONSTITUTION DAY and Sept 17-23 of each year as CONSTITUTION WEEK.
In 2004 Public Law 108-447, Section 111 was passed requiring the following:
"Each educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution of September 17th of such year for the students served by the education institution.
"...each Federal agency or department shall provide education and training materials concerning the Untied States Constitution to each employee..on September 17 of each year."

    I don't understand exactly what happened, but my kid in kindergarten said he refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance. He said the teacher said he had to stand but didn't have to say it. He couldn't articulate clearly why he refused except he said he didn't know what it meant and thought it was about God. I told him it means you're promising to be on America's side, and you could say parts of it or none of it. He may not have told me the true reason; maybe he just wanted to be naughty.

    We decided not to say anything to him further or ask his teacher, even though we're curious. We like that he's even thinking about the concept of whether to go along with the gov't. We resisted the urge to say anything. We don't want to helicopter over him always on his case about anything he does related to liberty. I think this is a case of less interaction being more.

    All my classes today and tomorrow open with a salute to the document.
    What I appreciate is it's intended line in the sand binding the central government to certain rules and respecting rights. This document is a great model, and has long been a light on the hill of self rule.
    But dang what the beast has done to this document. I doubt the original signers would recognize it anymore. What can't the government do with the modern interpretation of the general welfare clause?

    I think day one of life is the place to start. I *know* no infant can absorb and abstract message, but I don't know when they start, so I say start absurdly early with the understanding they won't get it all.

    Indeed. I will inquire. I have grand nieces and nephews that need the lesson. If they are not being provided, I will happily provide. I will also chastise the parents if I find they are not.
