Tesla didn’t so much pioneer the modern electric car as it did the modern electric car grift.

Excerpt:
"It worked like this:

The people who constitute the federal government decreed that businesses that earn money via free exchange would either have to waste money complying with federal regulations obliging them to reduce their “emissions” of the dread inert gas carbon dioxide – as by manufacturing “zero emissions” EVs themselves – or pay Tesla for credits that could then be credited against their own “emissions” for not manufacturing EVs. Tesla being given credit for producing cars that don’t “emit” the dread inert gas carbon dioxide at the tailpipe but never mind the “emissions” emitted in the course of making them – and powering them.

In this way, Tesla got the government to finance its business while at the same time hobbling rival businesses. GM, Ford, Stellantis (the combine that owns Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram trucks) spent money financing Tesla, via the carbon credits they were essentially forced to buy from Tesla.

It’s the crony capitalist analog of the wasp that stings – and paralyzes its prey and then lays its egg on the victim, which remains alive while the baby wasp gradually consumes it, alive."
------------------------------------------------
If we participate, if we do not protest, if we do business buying the products that can't compete in a free market and accept the crumbs that government offers for our participation in the conspiracy, we are consenting to enslavement of our children and grandchildren for their entire lives.
Now is the time to STRIKE back against these cronies of government.
Bankrupt these b@$t@rd$ while we still can survive.

The second issue, and perhaps the most significant is the vehicle’s complexity. Modern ICE cars are already so complex, one can no longer diagnose and fix their own vehicle. Even if you could. The parts are crazy expensive and so diverse you will never be assured the factory will support your vehicle in the mid to long term future. Now add to this complexity an all electric vehicle with ever-changing software versions, and this spell’s disaster for long term ownership.
I just watched an old buck mechanic who spelled it out clearly. He is done fixing modern cars. Too much to go wrong. He finding cars that would look totally in place on a used car lot but are in a salvage yard because what is wrong with it exceeded cars value. This is only going to get worse as time goes on. Older repairable cars are going to increase in demand for all the obvious reasons. Think of what happened in Cuba and you’ll see the picture

Playing devils advocate, Musk took advantage of the rules he was offered. That said, no other car company retains as much control over your car (after you bought it) as Tesla does. Down to whether he allows you to charge your own car.

The entire situation that Elon took advantage of should have NEVER existed; yet, the fact that he took advantage of the opportunity is EXACTLY what makes America great. When there is an opportunity to exploit and advantage and make oneself incredibly rich. One would be wrong to not take the opportunity when it is offered. It is just wrong that the Government made this opportunity available.

By that rationale Prescott Bush should be praised for helping Nazi Germany's war efforts for profit.
Some profitable actions are wrong on principle.
Being a sympathizer with evil was once punished and those who do
so today are assisting in the WEF plan to enslave mankind.
All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing (or worse, to conspire with evil for profit.)

You have a point; however, it seems that Prescott Bush was well rewarded for his actions in that he made a large sum of money and got multiple of his descendants into high offices.

Yes, there are actions that are wrong (Evil) and we should all stand for what is right (Good) but are we to place the good of ourselves/ family over the good of mankind in general?

Yes, the evil was allowed to spread (using the banking cartel's power.)

Short term profit is foolish if you become a slave in the longer term.
Tesla is not the embodiment of Rearden metal or Galt's engine.
Elon is not the embodiment of Galt, Rearden, or D'anconia.
They didn't accept the government bribes.
Did they place the good of mankind over their own?
They could have profited in the short term from collusion with government.
Galt was offered control of virtually all government policy; he refused the bribe.

Agreed! Yet it would be impossible to argue that he isn't working in HIS best interest. He is using the system. It is the SYSTEM that we need to be change, Elon is a symptom of the problem not the cause.

Using your rationale, Elon is a hero while Galt, Readen, and D'Anconia are fools for going on strike.
              That is false reasoning.
Elon has freedom of choice and has chosen to conspire with evil for short term profit that will result in destruction long term.
The evil is as obvious to Elon as it is to me.
He is not a symptom; his actions make him a cause.
Such actions are as good in the long run as unlimited fiat currency is for the value of the USD.

Personally I see parallels between D'Anconia and his mines and Elon and Twitter. Not as clear cut and dramatic as in AS but similarities.

We are discussing Elon's looting activities at Tesla which are clear.
Twitter is a completely different issue which is yet to play out.
Elon may yet prove to have some good principles, but his actions at Tesla
                  are in conflict with such.
If his looting acts at Tesla are praised he will never learn and never be
                  comparable to D'Anconia.

I think I have to side with eyecu2 on this point. The subsidies were enacted into law before Musk formed Tesla, and I don't think he sent lobbyists to create them. Further, several models of subsidized electric and hybrid cars came before the first Tesla model. Musk just created a bigger and better electric car, partly enabled by the grift. But I don't see him as making anybody poorer, since the subsidies came from federal debt that will never be paid back.

I'm more bothered by Musk's Solar City, where he both had a more direct connection to starting the grift and played a shell game with Tesla funds to bail out Solar City when its subsidies ran out. I suppose this is a cautionary tale, the moral being never to invest in the companies of someone so rich it is effectively impossible to sue him when he screws his shareholders.

Maybe I'm wrong. Let's discuss this more.

Everyone who produces and stores value in the USD is poorer.
Everyone who has lost freedom to the Deep State is poorer.
Accepting the bribes of the state by Tesla is still looting.
They need not have invented looting to participate.

So getting government's sanction to loot the public is morally permissible? That how one makes his/her fortune is less important than whether it gets made at all? Ummmmm.....

Consider the whole from his position. His actions are legal, profitable and arguably helpful to some people. Electric vehicles are largely a bad idea but there are some uses. No one claims that energy drinks are good for you. That people should drink Monster or Redbull exclusively; yet, those companies are selling their product as fast as they can make it .Are the producers of those products immoral for taking advantage of the fact that they are legal?

By your same logic you justify Dr. Fauci making $300 million off of "vaccines" which didn't even work... You go down that road if you want but I'm not travelling it with you. Just because something is legal does not make it moral.

Everyone is a hero in their own story. Do you think that Hitler or Stalin et al believed that they were Evil? I have not argued that Elon is a hero. In fact I think that the title of this thread is appropriate. I would go so far as to call Elon the modern King of grift, though Fauci would love to usurp him. Though I still stand by my statement that he is working in his best interest.

As you point out, Stalin and Hitler thought the same. The question is whether or not Reality agrees. And it would only agree if it were subject to the whims of man...

History is rife with the whims of man. George Washington was no hero to the English, nor was Alexander the Great a hero to those that he conquered. Jeff Davis and Robert E Lee were hero's until the North wrote the history. Time will reveal how history will remember Elon or if it even will.

But he is working towards what he believes is his best interest.

You missed my point. Reality is. And Reality is not subject to the whims of man regarding anything - especially not what is considered legal. That's my point. You keep trying to make the equivalency of legal = moral and that's where your argument fails. Reality's standard of morals doesn't care what human beings want to declare "legal."

The point is the morality is determined by society and changes over time, and while we all would like to deny this, it does. Up until 200 years ago it was perfectly moral to own slaves. Divorce or having a child out of wedlock was considered immoral until recently, and ALL of these alphabet sexualities/ genders were considered not just immoral or illegal but even mental illnesses. Personally I still believe that those are mental illnesses but that's not the discussion at this time. By and large legal does equal moral. Not necessarily right but yes moral.

Killing someone is normally considered wrong; yet, there are times that it is acceptable (self defense) or carried out by the state (Capitol Punishment) or even encouraged (war).

What Elon has done with Tesla, is legal and moral. You can argue over whether or not it is right.

"Not necessarily right but yes moral."

That's a complete contradiction in terms. Something can not be "not right" and moral at the same time (A = !A). Again, you are confusing legal with moral. Legal changes - absolutely. Moral does not. Morals are absolute, universal, and unchanging. Legal is simply what a given government is willing to enforce.

I didn't ignore it. IT IS WRONG. Just because something is legal does not make it moral.

Morality is not determined by mankind. Legality is an invention of mankind. Societies which conform their legal statutes to match the morality of natural law are in harmony with Reality and can persist. Societies which attempt to legalize immoral behavior conflict with Reality and the consequences eventually bring down that civilization. Reality will always win in the long term.

America's Founding Fathers recognized that morality existed independent of man and called that morality natural law. "We hold these truths to be self-evident..." is not a statement of original authority, but one which recognizes that man has certain rights and privileges in situ (or as a result of being a human being) and not according to one's station in life.

The only people who assert changing morality and principles are tyrants seeking self-justification for immoral activities. As soon as one gives in to the misbegotten notion that morality can be determined by whomever currently wields the instruments of power one cedes sovereignty over one's own being and invites their own enslavement.

Morality is determined by society and society changes over time. I would have to be in a position of power to be a tyrant. This alone negates your argument.

We fundamentally disagree. Reality is the author of morality - not humanity. The Founding Fathers recognized this fact. Tyrants attempt to ignore it and declare themselves the arbiters of Reality, but Reality owns itself.

One need not be a ruler to be a tyrant. The seeds are placed within anyone who believes themselves to be above natural law or superior to Reality. Neither kings, religious caliphates nor military dictators hold their positions out of moral justification and the Founding Fathers identified this fact by declaring that the only moral ruler is one who is elected by the people and that because people own themselves. The moment one declares morality to be determined by any given human being one simultaneously justifies any action taken by such a tyrant: murder, rape, theft, etc. There becomes nothing off limits. Any action can be justified if one can back it by coercion.

You may persist in this irrational line of thinking but as I said, you will walk that road alone. Adieu.

Tesla did two things: 1) figure out how to game the system, as you note, 2) switch the game for EVs from economy cars to luxury cars, thus avoiding the issues with ridiculous prices. The first was not unique. The second was pivotal.

Tesla had no, ZERO, EV technology. The motors are crap, the drive and controls are totally conventional (arguably the controls are substandard which was another reason to use induction machines rather than vastly superior PM machines). The batteries were laptop batteries in giant packs.

Then they brought on a bunch of other stuff: self-driving, dog-mode, they actually got manufacturing engineering moving along (the first Model S was a disaster). Better chargers, etc. Still no fundamental EV technology.

Having spent some time “poking under the hood” of a early Tesla and with my background in Automation I can attest that I was pretty unimpressed with the technology on display.
It looked like something that a very talented but inexperienced engineering college funded lab group would throw together in a rented store and lock. Big and clunky not terribly well thought out as far as layout. I will admit that I am clueless as to crashworthiness designs and crumple zones etc..

“The people, meanwhile, will lose interest in working – because why bother when the people who constitute the government take practically everything you earn and there’s not much you’re interested in buying with what’s left over anyhow.

    This is the Soviet Model.”

And that’s why the Soviets had check points and papers required deep inside its borders. It had nothing to do with keeping the capitalists out of the “Workers Paradise” and had more to do with keeping the workers in close proximity to their assigned jobs. There will come a point where the demographics that are predisposed to not working will regret voting all of this in. Especially when the CBDCs start to have their desired effect. This period of relative lawlessness will be looked back upon fondly. They scream racism now…..just wait until the MSM narrative pendulum swings back.

Maybe both, LOL. I just did a search on the phrase and a whole lot of stuff popped up. It's apparently a Russian joke (with meaning) that got published in numerous places over time. I recall it in a Time article, but didn't see that one in the search (I didn't look at all the results so it may have been in there someplace).

Well, there is ANOTHER Angle. I have a friend from University whose son works at Tesla...

the real value is the software, mapping, and the AI.
Musk has MILLIONS of hours of drivable roads, intersections, accidents, emergencies, etc.

That AI needs this to train with is obvious. That there will be an industry standard on this stuff. That there will be companies willing to license this data.
That having an AI Driven vehicle that MUST BE insured by the provider of the AI (and these people will self-insure, and use re-insurance).

Then, they will use government to MANDATE a certain level of training/certification for ANY AI...

And then they will mandate SWARM mode communications between ALL cars, of all makes/models, so that they can avoid accidents, and when one car has a blowout, it can be given the path it needs to get to the side of the road without an accident.

Elon is playing a VERY LONG Game using SHORT Incentives. Many of his financial incentives are now being stripped away... Since he made it work.

Also, along the way, we become VERY educated. The new engine designs, the new braking systems. I wonder what would happen if Musk was working on UAPs or Planes...

Imagine a modular plan where (like those roller skates that strap OVER your shoes), the fuselage loaded with people and cargo and food, were what you waited in. Fully fueled up, and ready to go.

The plane lands, a crane moves the fuselage out. Bolts the new one in. And taxi's away.

Passengers and bags from the old plane (fuselage) disembark from all exits. It's cleaned an reloaded just in time for the next plane.

Things like that WONT happen until someone gets deeply involved with what's wrong with the current state of the art and starts changing things.

Should the government "Pick" the winners and losers... No... But I don't mind some incentives to move things forward... UNFORTUNATELY such things ALWAYS get corrupted!

Several issues I have with this approach.

      1) The assumption that AI will ever get this right. I have serious doubts. Was just listening to a co-worker today who was stressed out about having to be ready to override the autopilot because it was flaky. And he has a late-model Tesla. I think people are assuming that AI will at some point approach the intelligence of a human being. I think that we ought not to count on this.

      2) Asimov. There are no moral controls on these AI's. None. Morals are for human beings and as we've seen with the FBI/CIA and big tech, these are way too easy to corrupt. We've also seen how ChatGPT has a distinctly progressive bent because of how it was trained. And the big tech companies lean progressive...

      3) The "mandate" that vehicles have SWARM technology. The networking involved there is absolutely insane AND would necessitate a system that tracks you everywhere you go. That part alone should make ANY liberty-minded individual very uncomfortable.

I'm seeing a LOT of red flags here. Queue Terminator theme song and cut to Skynet...

        You are NOT Wrong!

Except that AI now plays Chess, Go, and most other strategy games better than humans. And AI Fighter Pilots are already winning, and can take the equipment beyond human capabilities.

They will never be "fool proof" because "fools are too ingenious!" LOL... That's why they will self-insure.

The networking for swarm drones is fairly light weight, since it doesn't communicate backwards to home base. It's a local area network. Combined with absolute sensors. They can even detect a single vehicle in the midst that is not able to participate.

The interesting part with cars will be one one car can be at the BACK of one swarm, and the HEAD of another.

I do believe the singularity will come in my lifetime. I was lucky enough to be alive when Kasparov MISSED the date when computers would crush him...

With ALL of the training videos. The ability to have AI Generate more training videos, of ever increasing complexity.

The inherent destruction of value will be startling.
In Swarm mode... Very few body shops are needed. All car insurance companies will end up out of business. (besides nobody can afford the cars).

"The networking for swarm drones is fairly light weight, since it doesn't communicate backwards to home base. It's a local area network."

It is anything but lightweight. At a minimum, you have to establish ALL of the following:

          1) Method for determining size/scope of a given swarm.
          2) Method for adding a vehicle to a given swarm.
          3) Method for determining how a swarm member is promoted to boss/controller.
          4) Method for determining how a swarm member is demoted.
          5) Method for removing a vehicle from a given swarm
          6) Method for communicating between swarms to determine co-membership/exclusivity ***
          7) Method for determining events necessary to broadcast to swarm
          8) Method for transmitting event information to swarm (bandwidth-intensive)
          9) Method for tracking ALL operations of EVERY vehicle in a given swarm
          10) Method for sharing ALL tracking information with every member of a swarm
          11) Method for continuous polling of swarm members
          12) Error handling of continuous polling for swarm members
          13) Broadcast networking technical details such as range/power, frequency, etc.
          14) Broadcast networking band plan based on area to prevent conflicts

Some of those items are less intensive than others, but overall, that's a HUGE amount of data you've got constantly flying around plugging up the airwaves. That's a TREMENDOUS amount of EM being generated and keeping it sorted and manageable (not to mention safe for the human occupants).

It's a lot bigger project than first glance suggests.

Just thought of one more thing: what do you do about Emergency vehicles? Do they become the automatic swarm controller? How does one authenticate/differentiate between a "privileged" vehicle and a non-privileged vehicle? Are there different levels of privilege/priority? Not sure how one does that at anything but a centralized level...

When the number of cars has been reduced to 1% of current by eliminating all but the wealthy the software can be much simpler.
The control of dissidents will be much simpler, too. Progress will be all but eliminated since the market for improvements will be relatively tiny
and the creation of ideas will be sovietized. Financial incentives will be non-existent and production will revert to the feudal dark ages.
That is what awaits future generations of serfs if we do nothing.

AI isnt going to be perfect in all situations. After all, peoples' brains are really sophisticated computers fed by sensors. And people mess up all the time. can AImess up less? perhaps. But you arent going to get into an ai driven car with the assurance of NEVER getting into an accident

I havent bought an american car in a LONG time. They are pieces of crap that cost too much in order to pay for the legacy costs those companies have.

Tesla shouldn't get credits for having an electric car, and I don't like that they got subsidies and credits. I don't buy an EV because at the present they are just very inconvenient to operate. I notice the American companies are falling over themselves to copy tesla, but they are losing money on each EV they make. EV has been promoted by our government, which should have stayed out of promotion of EV altogether.

In an electric car, you are going to be sitting on 500 pounds of Lithium batteries that catch fire when they get wet! Trucks will be adding 1,000 pounds. This should help our bridges and roads. You'll wear out the tires on your car sooner.

I agree that we disagree. Reality is Reality but Reality is not Morality.

Morality is determined by what is acceptable by society at large.

You may persist to state that 1=2 but this is false.
