Nothing the Dimocrat party does to select their candidates surprises me. They abandoned democracy in 2008 when they started using "superdelegates" to determine who "won" their primaries. I had thought they were going to do that after the midterms so they would have 10 years of Cowmela by fixing the next two elections and by then they would have had everything in place with the change that will inevitably happen with the court.
