Back in my day there was no metalflake paint, just one straight color and much more shinny than the cars these days. Don't get me wrong, I like the effect but it can't compare to a freshly shined lacquer paint job.

I've noticed the micro-flakes as well. But in my mind they are kinda pointless if you have to get within a foot to see the metallic effect.

At a crowded intersection just last week
I was looking at how many cars were gray , black or white as I sat in my 14 year old maroon Impala.

I think you are talking about the Enamel / lacquer Look - solid color (Non Metal Flake), Like the old days.
Although, look closely and you'll see micro flakes.

LOL! My wife and I have commented on this as well (it has to be pretty obvious for my wife to comment on something automotive!). To me, they look like they were primed, but they forgot to put on the color coat!
