EV Overnight Seepage

Excerpt:
"Vs have a seepage problem.

They lose charge (and so, range) when they’re not in use, if they’re not plugged in while they’re not in use.

It is a problem I’ve personally experienced with half a dozen different makes/models of electric vehicle over the past six months, indicating it is a general/inherent problem rather than a “bug” that afflicts a specific make or model – and this makes sense because while there are different makes/models of EV, almost all of them have the EV equivalent of a radio that never turns off or some other small but significant accessory power draw. And it isn’t something that can be fixed – because it’s supposed to be that way."

Let me tell you I wouldn't dare buy one. My Ford SUV has a battery that costs $206. When my steering went out, my contact at my local Ford dealer said my 'Steering rack' was powered by my battery, not steering fluid and repairing that steering rack would run about $3,000. I bought a new battery, mine was 4 yrs old. Warranty over. at 3 years. Steering doing fine. N

All batteries leak. Atmospheric currents even continually draw off small amounts of power from the battery over time, which is why a car which has been sitting unused for six months can have a dead - or even unusable - battery. I have a buddy who works in Alaska as a schoolteacher for eight months out of the year but maintains a residence just down the street. I occasionally go over and drive his car around for him just to make sure it doesn't die.

And as has been pointed out by others, modern vehicles have a lot of doodads, geegaws, and thingamajigs constantly drawing power. It's really annoying because it exacerbates electrical problems and wears out the battery faster. I really wish that there was a physical "kill" switch coming off the battery which could be used to sever these types of connections until re-enabled.

The real issue here is that the primary draw on a battery for a ICE vehicle is to get it started, after which the engine - via the alternator - can replenish the battery. With an EV, there's no way to replenish the battery except to plug it in.

All recent cars do this to some extent. One of mine that sees only occasional use has to go on the Battery Tender if is sits over about 10 days. Apparently there is lots of "memory" stuff (radio stations, seat positions, garage door opener codes etc etc), that require current to maintain the memory. I replaced the battery and had to reprogram the windows!

👍 I also have mine on a battery charger. I had to add an electronic gadget to keep vermin away from the engine
compartment and that will drain the battery if not on a charger. Better than having wires chewed through by rats. ;^)

Lithium batteries aren't even supposed to be stored, fully charged.

I have chargers for a drone and MP3 player that shut off early, for that very reason.

    batteries loose power over time

the deep cycle marine batteries i have for emergencies are all connected to chargers/conditioners designed to keep them full

I hate the entire idea of EVs, first because we are not even close to a pweor grid which will not collapse under their charging milions of cars. Second, they catch fire, often. Tehy are a danger to recuse personnel. I know, Commie Harris wants big yellow EV school buses, which I hope she is on board when they go to flames. I am sick that they are dumping my beloved Camaros, my husbands beloved Challenger and our daughters and ( Gibbs, NCIS) charger. Those are real cool cars. They are not bad on gas, and they do not catch fire. All we need is common sense and open pipeline, as CO2 is not the issue. We have Sun cycles and Earh cycles, which do the weather changes, and now we are seeing the Earth cycle of switcing of the poles, which could put someone under feet of ice, as it did in Antarctica. The head of GM has to be a total brain dead idiot.

I remember that cars from the 50's and 60's would have trouble starting and running when cold. Capitalism took care of that with the advent of fuel injection to replace the issues with "chokes". EV's are really too new to have all their problems solved, and maybe shouldnt even be mass produced until they are safer from fires, and tweeked in a number of ways to make them last longer. Government is trying to force manufacturers to stop ICE manufacturing for their own ideological reasons. This is stupid. let the people make those decisions. I dont even think about buying some electric thing at this point in time. Maybe later when they are perfected. For the time being, give me an ICE car that works reliably and has decent range, power, and known reliability.

My first car was a '64, iirc, and it needed a choke to start, but it always started for me.
(Of course I had to remember to turn off the choke when it had warmed up a bit.)
      It wasn't rocket science. [grin]
Electronics have made it easier, more reliable, and made better efficiency possible.
Government has made nothing possible except misery (for about 163 years.)

I agree. Government always stands in the way of what people really want. When they say how bad a government shutdown is, I rejoice and wish the shutdown would cintinue

This is true. Batteries self discharge due to their internal impedance. It is pretty slow. All batteries do it. Different chemistries at different rates. It is pretty slow, but definitely present.

I will never purchase an EV after my experiences with a 2012 Nissan Leaf which I have posted here in the past If the battery manufacturers are able the create a Carbon composite battery that has better overall performance and market it without carbon in the name. The Woke mob would go insane with anything with carbon in it.
