If I want to talk to my state representative I can take a 20 minute walk and go knock on his door. If I want to speak with my Prosecutor I can text him and say “Let’s meet for a pint, I’ll buy.”

When the shortages were hitting the stores during the pandemic we were horse trading out here for meat and vegetables. The farmers all made it clear. In a crisis before they’ll sell to the wholesalers they’ll sell to the locals. Because they know 1000 hungry people 100 miles away isn’t as scary as 100 hungry people 10 miles away.
That’s worth more to me than any amenities the big city has to offer.
