What is "Driving?" Are you really a "driver?"

Excerpt:
"H.G. Wells wrote his novel, War of the Worlds, in 1898 – when a “driver” was someone who drove horses, as in commercially.

In italics for a reason.

Or rather, a definition.

Today, we use the term, “driver” to refer to someone who operates a motor vehicle, privately. Is the distinction important?

Maybe.

Is it possible the people who assert that the law does not oblige people who simply operate a private motor vehicle for personal use to get (and present) a license – because they are not drivers, as in the commercial sense, might be right? They are arguably right as a matter of common law and general tradition in that until relatively recently, human beings have always been understood to have a right to travel. Put another way, until relatively recently – around the dawn of the 20th century – no one had to obtain a license – that is to say, government permission – to travel by horse or carriage or any other privately owned conveyance."

Yes, the government's definition of "driver" is an intentional (unconstitutional) over-reach of government into individual rights.

Don't let your license expire! I did! I had to prove I was a citizen...passport and birth certificate (original copy)...two items showing current address (old license doesn't count. Then I had to pass a 30 question test (no problem), then take an Impact test and get a certificate. But the most fun was the driver's test. I failed! (1) Didja know you are supposed to stop at a stop sign in front of it. Not beside it, in front of it. And the biggee is you have to parallel park your Ford Suv Explorer, you must back up holding a speed of 25 mph and do not, do not, under any circumstance remove one hand from the steering wheel! Not even to wipe your runny nose! Also there is something about 'position' and observation (the tester's opinion). This is BS! I'm going to do some investigation. I think this is part of the war against the elderly. I got my license at the age of 14 (72 years ago) and I've had one ticket (35 in a 30 zone). I've never even bumped another car with door. We don;t even have parallel parking in my city. When I have to parallel park, I go find another spot. N

I can relate somewhat. I am on hold right now with my car insurance agent. I had a claim last year when I
couldn't avoid hitting some rubber left in the road from a damaged truck tire during a rain storm.
It damaged the front spoiler below the bumper and it cost about $900 to be fixed after my $100 deductible.
(I'm still waiting for the body shop to have time to fix it.) The truck that left the tire rubber in the road was long gone.
Today I received my new bill for insurance and the cost was increased from $775 to $2,500.
I have not had a claim in about 40 years and have paid for insurance all that time. The car is 24 years old now.
I guess I should have just paid for the damage myself, but I guess I am naive to think that this is the reason
I pay for car insurance service.
Apparently this is how that worthless scumbag looter Warren Buffet became wealthy.

My trucker friend was pulled over for a blinker in his personal car, explained that he was Travelling, not Driving a commercial truck. It's going nowhere to argue this point with a police officer and of course it's deadly to force the point. He managed to escape with a fixit ticket which is easy to get anyway. One should not have to present an ID when Travelling, only when Driving Commercially. That doesn't mean we get to break the laws of course and claim Traveling. Lots of fools in handcuffs for trying to pull that legalese stunt.
