This concept has been a topic of discussion in many podcasts lately. While I'm not fully comfortable with it...I think it's probably a decent "correction" from our current direction...

The biggest problem I see is that there is no practical geographic boundary. In many (most?) cases, the difference is urban vs rural/suburban. You end up with 100-150 "islands" of liberalism, surrounded by large, but sparsely populated areas of conservatism.

I wonder if there could be a wave of state boundary realignments? Highly unlikely, given the near 250 year history of the "limited" federal government stomping all over the States. Particularly in the West, but hardly limited to the Western States.

But it makes it interesting to watch this "movement" of eastern Oregon counties seeking to join Idaho. It is relevant to me being in the far northeastern county of Nevada, just south of that line.

I have always tongue-in-cheek proposed that Nevada trade Clark County to California in exchange for some of the northern California Counties that have several times expressed the admirable desire to secede from the rest of the "People's Paradise". The new entity would have all the minable resources of the Great Basin, the timber resources of Northern California, and an ocean port. All the gold and silver being mined in Nevada could go straight to a newly re-opened Carson City mint and be issued as our own real coinage for a sound monetary basis. Cattle and sheep could once again range on the vast open spaces generating real food and preventing the gigantic wildfires now routine under federal management.

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. Hmmm....I recall hearing that somewhere.

Love your idea about the trade! I'm in Washoe County. I really like it here, but we have some issues. Can't wait to start heading east of here and north to explore once we start getting better weather. Can't wait!

Haha! You're in for a great time. Many an adventure to have out there. Even with today's age of cell phones and GPS, etc one can get into trouble real quick in America's outback. And it is certainly not for everyone. For me though, as a gold mining and exploration geologist my entire adult life, the gigantic open spaces filled with the most incredible tectonic history is heaven.

If such a thing is of interest, learn as much geology as you can. That Basin and Range landscape out there is only a reflection of the last 10-20 million years of history. Embedded in all those ranges are shreds of nearly 400 million years of tectonic torture making for some of the most complicated geology on earth. Even if one couldn't give a hoot about rocks and old mines, the hidden secrets and amazing places are abundant. Once one gets off of the boring Interstate which takes the easiest least challenging path of resistance, the places back in there with hundreds of miles of dirt roads and scenery is awesome.
I know the Great Basin like the back of my hand and wouldn't trade all of that for any other lifetime.

Thanks. I'm excited! I have already made friends with a couple of geologists from Australia. One lives on my street with his family and will return to Australia eventually. The other owns a gold mining company, lives in Perth and comes over. Getting some education from them. Also, I'm piecing together an order for a custom fishing boat that I'll be using here a lot - Pyramid and lakes east...

Pyramid Lake is truly something else. Lots to explore there, too and a sturdy craft could get you to some places rarely visited by humans. Hot Spring geysers, and picture Fremont's route of discovery in the 1840's down the east side of the lake pulling a cannon in tow!
Going east from the big sinks, the lakes get far and few between, but when you find one, they are really interesting. Be sure to learn to recognize a dry playa versus a wet playa! Trickier than it sounds.

I had a friend who was a long time assayer from Arizona who relocated to Fallon. He heard about the mighty Reese River in central Nevada and decided to go fishing. He returned in a couple of days saying it was not what he expected. What they call a "River" even elsewhere in the West is a bit generous for this body of water. It is said you can step into it and sink over your head in water - but you can easily jump across it! True enough, it heads in some really pretty mountainous country and courses for over a hundred miles to the north to contribute to the Humboldt River at Battle Mountain. But water only gets there in years of rare spring floods! And 19th swindlers sold stock in the Reese River Steamboat Company to the greenhorns from the east!

Sounds good to me, assuming the islands must trade to survive.
If (1) the rural areas are not invaded and captured by force and (2) government of the rural areas is restrained,
the free market can allocate resources based upon merit. If allowed to flourish, that will doom the holier-than-thou woke.
Not that I actually think that will happen when the scum in DC
have military assets available to prevent it.

It will take a violent armed revolution to achieve equitable separation, imo.
The looting scum in DC and statehouses nationwide will never acquiesce to
requests for secession by honest freedom-loving people.
The scum in DC must maintain power over all their serfs.
The war criminal Lincoln recognized this and waged war on the serfs who
rebelled against his tyranny. He has been praised for 160 years for mass
    murdering 400,000 innocent people.
NIFO. Target the Lincoln Memorial. That set of statues should be destroyed
along with the tyranny it created.

I would imagine that if we pulled it off it would just be a matter of time before the economically depressed and crime ridden blue nations would want to start a war with the red nations. They'd have their hands full...
