Thoughts About the Acadamy Awards

I love movies, so I love the Academy Awards. But I detested having to see a reminder of politics at the end of the show. Out of all of the films, I feel Atlas Shrugged part II was the boldest attempt of 2012. Some of the independent films and foreign film categories would have lost to Atlas if everything was really about film quality. But it's not.

    LOL!
Now I know why I keep suggesting the school kids spend a day working on a farm... it would work miracles I'm convinced! (But that would be meeeeeeean.)

    eskslo,
have you ever read Calumet K? it was written at the turn of the 20th century and was an influence to Ayn Rand when she first came to the US. I think you'd like it

my mom always says, "you know what? farm life is brutal."
she also once told my cosmopolitan daughter, who in her defense, did not grow up on a farm and has wicked self-determination and strong work ethic,
"hun, those aren't pygmy pigs! they're piglets! I'd ask if my daughter raised you in a barn-but clearly not!"

Very little work ethic out there. It is quite sad and I do not like it. However, it is a bit fun when you are going head to head with these people in the work force. It's not to hard to just run them over these days

I wouldn't be able to keep my puke down long enough to speak to that pile! How icky can one person be anyway? As for the GW clerks...I get my jollies by saying ,"No, I sure don't." When they ask me if I want to round up my total and donate my change to whatever the heck charitable junk their schlepping on any given week. Their attitude immediately changes with my answer. It's almost comedic.

My wife has what she calls "after company lectures" for when I behave badly...which is every time we go out. These days she loves it so much the lecture is just an inside joke. She eggs me on more than anything cause she knows I cant wait to let loose.

All of my customer service contacts are via email, but I have called a few out on different things. I won't be toyed with! Or ripped off. People can be so manipulative it's disgusting. At my old job (talking to people all over the country ALL DAY LONG (nightmare flashbacks).... I used to keep screen prints of funny names.... there are some doozies out there.

Loving these ideas LetsShrug and khalling. You guys are rock stars! One thing I also pride myself on is being able to do other peoples jobs. Many people on job sites dont know me, and I typically wear a suit and tie, even though I go by sites, as most of the time is in my office. I have been know to walk up to people on the job site and literally take the hammer out of their useless hands and proceed to do the work myself if it is not up to my standards. Same with other trades like tile, flooring, framing, etc. You should see the look on a works face when a guy in a suit (me) comes up behind them and yells something like "goddammit, give me your hammer. Do it like this or else I am perfectly happy doing it myself", and proceeeds to show them how to do their job right. Priceless.

I don't do it just to be a jerk though so I don't want this to come off wrong. Time is money so every second counts and I expect everyone around me to act accordingly. Also, constructions is dangerous, and if someone does not care to be safe and do their job right then they can leave.

I also loved that line. and the first actor who played James T. he nailed him, in my opinion, but I don't think he read the book, because I saw him in an interview, and , well, he only sorta got it, if you know what I mean

man, if I lived near you, we would be a virtual terror to lack of work ethic, time, and customer service sloths-
we'd keep a cry page. every time we made some panty waist cry, we'd keep track in a book. then publish it

When the time presents itself...I WILL say it. No qualms about it at all. (I once told someone, who was taking forever and holding a group of us who were in a big hurry to get somewhere, "Listen, I don't have time for this." She was soooo offended she didn't come with us at all. As if that was going to make me FEEEEL bad or something.. Not! People really need to get over themselves.

Do it letsShrug. It feel great just to say it out loud. I think the other party wants to hear it anyway. Its like they are begging for a walk up call ;) Glad someone else enjoyed that part too. The only redeeming line James has

Funny you mentioned that...when I watched AS the other night I laughed out loud when James said that line! Brilliant! I will definitely use it some day. :)

Another thing that always gets people is using the word absurd. Far too underused in my opinion. When people are mid sentence I will sometimes say "thats absurd" quite loudly. They are so caught off guard that they rarely recover

I hate to quote James Taggart, and I am not trying to hold him up as an example, but I think the movie did a great job in Part 1 when they are at the anniversary part and James is at the bar with Readen's brother Phillip, and Phil is quoting Scutter, and James turns to him and says "who are you" and walks away lol.

I have pulled that a few times and loves every second. The first time my wife shocked, but then proud once she thought about it. I was at a social party and someone I didn't know what running their mouth without thinking hoping I was impressed I think, and I was so bored I literally looked right at them and said "who are you and why are you talking to me?" Before they had a minute to answer I walked off to refresh my drink. The look on their face was priceless.

It is entertaining to watch the stuttering stumbling deer in headlights flailing that happens when asked to explain their stance. It's that or they get belligerent. I watched a senator from Minn do that two nights ago. He just kept repeating the question asked or speaking over the host of the news program. It was like watching a 4 year old arguing. "Bigger one! Are so"! That sort of base stupidity.

Haha. I have gotten away with being pretty pushy with people as well. Construction/development in the private sector is a very different corporate culture. I come to work expecting to fight for what I want all day. And I love it. So when someone chimes in with some BS liberal agenda that I know for a fact they are repeating verbatim without an intelligent thought otherwise, I fully call them out in public. Often I find asking a few simple questions in front of a room of their peers and watching them fall all over the place stumbling for answers they do not have, is just as effective as being rude of walking away. I love the spectacle of throwing them a shovel and just watching them dig their own hole. Its too easy really.

If their behavior persists, that is when I usually walk away mid sentence, hang up on them, shut my door while they are still talking, or simple inform them that my time on earth is finite and I simply do NOT have time to listen to things that my 2.5 year old already knows doesn't make sense. I let them know that I feel progress is the only thing that matters, and for that reason I cannot regress my intellect to their level of emotional debate. The look on their face is always priceless. Worth whatever fall out I may have to deal with later.
