Unexpected Consequences

Rock meet Hard Place.

Here's the problem with things like this: it's bad either way. If you ship the Chinese the technology, it gives them a strategic advantage. But NOT shipping them right now when the US isn't very capable of defending Taiwan where these chips are made only encourages the Chinese to assault Taiwan.

In related news, the Chinese have been buzzing Taiwan's airspace with recon drones and Taiwan yesterday was forced to fire on one of them. Add to that the denial by the Solomon Islands to a US ship to port.. Escalation is happening quick.

I think it would be in our national interest to do so. I would suggest that we lower corporate taxes in order to promote industry and manufacturing within our own borders.

I agree, but in order to implement an embargo one must have alternative supply lines. China - to its credit and our detriment - has successfully positioned itself as a near monopoly in several critical areas, most notably rare-earth minerals and pharmaceuticals.

Agreed. As has been proven time and time again, trading and other economic activity is a potent weapon and just as much a potent enabler (see China).

it ought to be against the law to finance totalitarian states. Doing so is a crime against humanity.

One would hope so. According to a couple of simulations, the Chinese supersonic ballistic missiles are a real problem for a carrier group...
