It has always been my understanding that the Speaker is elected (by the sitting members of the House), not appointed. Can you document that this is not the case?

Here is a scary thought- Since the Speaker of the House does not have to be a house member and can be pretty much anyone, what if Peolsi stepped away from the position and her nephew, Gavin Grewsom (CA Governor) was appointed speaker? Then think about the succession if Biden is no longer in office during his term. They could buy Harris off (she was after all Willie Brown’s HO) and who would be in line to take over? Anyone want to opine on this scenario?
