We've just deployed a couple of new "sign in" options that give you the ability to sign in to Galt's Gulch using your Facebook or Twitter accounts. Once you set it up, as long as you are logged into either facebook or twitter, you can sign in to the Gulch with just one click - no need to type in your user name and password.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Log out of Galt's Gulch
2. Click on either the "sign in with facebook" or the "sign in with twitter" button
3. Approve "Galt's Gulch Online"

Annnnd... you're done. Now log out of Galt's Gulch again to try it out and just click on the "Sign in to..." button of your choice.

Please try it out and let us know what you think.

Thanks,
Scott

P.S. We will NEVER post to your facebook or twitter account without your explicit consent. This feature is meant for the purposes of signing into the Gulch only.

I'm not against making the site more feature-full, however, I will probably never use this feature.

As far as attracting more trolls, this site is public and allows simple registration.

And what's more, a while ago I posted a link to a Facebook page of our good friend JGISD, where he was actively trolling for people to harass us.

If it wasn't successful then, it won't be successful now.

I also post good things about this site on Facebook quite often.
Maybe it gets shared and a hater sees it.

So, IMHO, the haters who hate us enough to harass us are already here.

Sure. I don't wish to be associated with any of the new social media. I understand that you need to do what you have to do to promote your movies to a wide range of potential customers. This is your house and I thank you for allowing me to enter it. Now I have to consider whether I still want to come over and play. Thanks for asking for my opinion.

Thanks for the response luck. Just so I'm clear as to what you're suggesting, you are considering leaving the Gulch because we permit users to login with their facebook and twitter accounts. Is that right?

Scott, just so I'm clear, are you trying to put words into my mouth? Further, did you really think your “Argument From Intimidation” would work on me? I don’t care what the other members do. I don’t care what you do with your own property. If you want to install a cesspool of liberalism in your main dining room, do it. It’s none of my business. If I don’t like the stench, I can leave. That said; kindly cancel my membership to the Gulch, effective immediately. Have a nice day. : )

Whoa whoa whoa cowboy. No intimidation here. Where did that come form?

Based on our conversations here, we're seriously considering removing the feature altogether. We're really just wanting to understand fully everyone's issues before killing it off. We took your comment VERY seriously.

Of course I can cancel your membership luck but we really wish you wouldn't go. Please reconsider.

                Hello Mr. Desapio,

I have been monitoring this conversation and frankly I am a bit uncertain what to think about it. I have difficulty seeing all the implications. It seems harmless enough but something doesn’t feel right. I have no problem with advertising the site and drawing new members from wherever you wish, but I feel it is no hardship to go to the site and sign up through it. It is easy to save your password and sign in screen and signing in through the original means. If it is too difficult for someone to do this then are we extending to every troll who wishes to spout off an easier entry when they don’t even have to start a membership, or does the sign in through this means only work for those who have an existing membership? Perhaps these concerns are unwarranted, but we have a group here that is naturally predisposed to caution as they know and have experienced the vitriol of the detractors, and know of the past security problems associated with those particular social media outlets. Many of us do not do facebook or twitter for these reasons as well as not wanting to support entities that often seem adversarial to our principles, or support political adversaries.

I hope itisntluck reconsiders or some accommodation can be reached. We will miss his input.
                Regards,
                O.A.

Well....THAT sucks! A voice of reason is galting the gulch. Someone who has the nads to speak his mind unhindered (I for one can appreciate that kind of straight talk).
Seriously Admins, Gulchers etc...what is so friggin' difficult about having to log into the gulch independent from Facebook...is anybody in here THAT lazy?? What IS the benefit? Oh...That's the question of the day.... WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF THIS LOGIN PAGE BEING ATTACHED (in any way) TO FACEBOOK?? (and...."ease" is not a worthy answer.)

I hear you Shrug. It may not be a worthy answer but, "ease" is actually the only reason we put it in. We had no idea there would be such strong opposition to the idea.

Who requested this feature? How did it even get brought up? There has to be another reason besides ease. It seems silly. Trying to fix something that isn't broke.

I actually requested it. Being a software engineer myself, I understood fully the technical implications and knew it was "safe." It never even occurred to me, or to anyone on the team for that matter, that anyone might object.

And no, there was really no other reason, then "ease." The Gulch gets a significant amount of traffic from facebook in particular. The intention was to make it easy for those users to create accounts and sign in.

At this point, after the brutal beating you've all given me, we're seriously considering killing it.

Considering I just watched Spartacus...the "beating" you received was not brutal.:) (Keep in mind...and we realize we're the "odd" ones...but) when we hear "facebook" we scream inside....it struck a nerve and it spilled over some. Didn't mean to make you a whipping post...we just HATE the idea of Facebook in general.) And you just got line of the day....

Yeah, it is horrific and I can only stand it because the blood looks like transmission fluid. I like the story of fighting for freedom, the dialog, score, the visceral feeling. The struggle is classic/ epic good vs. evil, the oppressed throwing off the yoke, producers vs. the takers.
The eye candy is bonus. My wife likes all the “beefcake.” She thought the original Spartacus was the hottest, now she can’t make up her mind between Gannicus or Crixus. Luckily she has me (strong man poses)…. LOL
Strange that I have no problem with field dressing a deer and growing up in farm country I have witnessed and sometimes participated in the processing of many farm animals, but I have trouble with displays of human dismemberment…
                            Oh the humanity!
                            Regards,

For some reason Crixus bugs me. lol If it was REAL body dismemberment I would have to look away, but it's t.v. dismemberment, with over dramatic (fake looking) blood splatter. (Not that I know what real blood splatter looks like... )

                                Good morning LetsShrug,

OK! Crixus has just made our %$&* list after Fridays episode!
                                Good show though.
So you are a Gannicus gal?
                                Regards,

Wow...I am incredibly stupid, OA. It's YOU I was talking with about Spartacus lol. I just popped in here to let you (not knowing it was you) know that I have completed Gods of the Arena. Gannicus was set free! He did grow on me a little. So now I'm on part 3 of Season 2 (or season 3 depending on how you look at it)...and I'm hoping Gannicus revisits at some point :). Thanks for telling me about the chunk of shows I missed.... And my husbands says they were the best episodes so far too. From now on I'll remember our conversations...sheesh.

You're ahead of me...I've only made it to the 2nd episode of season 2. I had to look up Gannicus...at what point did he join the show?? He doesn't look familiar.

I understand their sentiment, which is why I have not signed in through FB or twitter. I feel torn about this. On the one hand, I want to help spread the word about the movies. On the other hand, coming into the Gulch should not be this personal "appeal" I make to my "friends" on FB. I don't want to add 100 of my favorite lurkers to this site. I want to meet interesting, like minded people in here who are willing to discuss the most important topics of the day, the philosphy of Ayn Rand, these movies, and the very real actions these like minded people have taken or are ready to take or who want to take. I see these actions as sensitive, difficult and hard to explain/express in a FB forum. upshot: I do not see a common denominator in signing on with FB. twitter I do. That said, I am OK with the newsletter on FB. it is one more way of finding the gulch for those who are already looking?

For now, yes. Instead of having to type in your Gulch credentials, you can just click on one of the alternate buttons and get right in.

We may eventually put in an option for you to post directly to facebook/twitter from the Gulch but for now, it's for signing in only.

sometimes on websites, it will automatically attach to my FB account and then share with FB that I am looking at a various site on the timeline. I find that offensive and obnoxious. Could it be that that is eventually where you are headed with this site?

Absolutely not. We will never post anything to your facebook account. You are in complete control of what you post where. The facebook login option is meant to serve as a quick way to sign in to the Gulch. You maintain complete control over all of your content, comments, etc.

I know I'm old, but I hate that facebook has it's.... face... in everything... like the world can't exist without it. If this ends up turning into a liberal invasion of the gulch... it won't be good. :( I really feel like everybody in here has found there way here by sheer gulch mind set gravitation. I get that you're trying to attract more people to Atlas, I can appreciate that effort, but with the way things are "out there" and their "by any means necessary" mentality I would hate to have it ruined by intolerant, lefty, thugs, who can't let people alone. Just throwing my opinion out there...

RE: "If this ends up turning into a liberal invasion of the gulch."
How might that happen exactly? The Gulch is already open to the public. I feel like I might be missing something here. Please elaborate.

Like I said before..."I really feel like everybody in here has found there way here by sheer gulch mind set gravitation." If it ends up on Facebook (although you say it won't) it will attract the pond scum. Like dk, I do not trust facebook. Perhaps my lack of trust for facebook is the problem.... I don't like the relationship with FB no matter how "unlinked" they are to the Gulch...it appears to be a common sign-in page. Since I do not have facebook and don't understand it inside and out I can't really elaborate any further.... It's a concern I have....I guess that's all it amounts to. (Being open to the public and having it somehow get plastered on facebook via everyone's pages is not the same thing... I know I know ..not going to happen. (??!!...) I have my doubts.)

I hate to break it to you Shrug but, the Gulch is already plastered all over facebook. We've got 120,000+ followers and post Gulch content there all the time: https://www.facebook.com/AtlasShruggedMo...

We actually get a significant amount of traffic from facebook daily.

Although I really want to understand, I'm afraid I'm still not entirely sure what your concern is. Rest assured however, you are not obligated to use this option. Nothing will change for you in your experience in the Gulch.

I KNOW Atlas has a facebook....that's not my issue. And since I don't have facebook (nor will I ever), I can't make a good argument other than I don't like it and don't want to be a part of it...on purpose or by mistake. I'm not losing any sleep over this I just don't trust them. The end :)
