We had a Kresge (my mom called it a 5 and dime). I always saw the food counter and wondered... It was outside of our budget. (And I laugh thinking about that now, with those prices). Oh how money was DEAR to our parents.
Definitely the source of my iniquity! One day I was sitting at the lunch counter at Woolworth's in Wheaton, MD, and they had this huge, strange looking concoction called "cheese" cake which sounded absolutely abominable.
But just to be a good sport, I thought I'd give it a try. That was in 1967 and I STILL remember the taste of that first bite of cheesecake. That immediately set me up to wondering what the HECK other foods people had been hiding from me?
Since then I've eaten a lot of cheesecake (too much, I'm sure), but none has come close to the flavor of that very first bite!
Not only have I eaten at a WW lunch counter, I ate at the counter that the four A&T Students staged their sit-in in downtown Greensboro NC. Realizing the importance of the event and the courage of the young men, it was inspiring.
I am not old enough to recall having enjoyed a meal at Woolworths. However, I have sat down and taken in the occasional Blue Plate Special at K-Mart. They also had a bag of sub-sandwiches (3 in total) for a buck. That was a few years ago.
