AR-15 Most Popular HUNTING Rifle In America

"In a survey commissioned by Winchester, 75% of centerfire rifle shooters used an MSR or "Modern Sporting Rifle." MSR is a term commonly used to refer to the AR-15 family of rifles.

Winchester found that 60% of those who hunt use a centerfire rifle, specifically an MSR. 40% of all hunters surveyed used MSRs such as the AR-15 for hunting.

This data would seem to contradict current legislative proposals on Capitol Hill, such as H.R. 1808, also known as the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022. Which just passed the House of Representatives in a 217-213 vote and currently sits awaiting a vote in the Senate.

MSRs are commonly used for hunting even in more restrictive states like Maryland, which ban cartridges like the .223 & 5.56 for hunting purposes. Because of this, many hunters choose to use straight wall cartridges like 350 Legend in MSRs like the Ruger AR-556MPR.

AR Platform rifles or "Modern Sporting Rifles" are a common choice for hunters who desire the platform's modularity and wealth of aftermarket support. According to Jordan Sillars of TheMeatEater, an outdoor lifestyle company founded by Steven Rinella, hunters can tailor their rifles to their specific needs.

In addition, statistics cited by Business Insider show that the number of AR-15s and other Modern Sporting Rifles has increased exponentially over the last two decades since the expiration of the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban.

Talking points about the proposed 2022 Assault Weapons Ban, or H.R. 1808, point to the idea that modern sporting rifles are not commonly used for hunting purposes. This new data released by Winchester seems to suggest otherwise.

2nd Amendment protections have been interpreted to apply to "all weapons in common, lawful use by American citizens."

The linked ZeroHedge article makes it abundantly clear that semi-auto rifles such as AR-15s easily qualify for 2nd Amendment protection.

Those who oppose manufacture, private ownership, and free-market distribution of semi-auto rifles are simply advocating a police state, regardless of their professed goal of eliminating "gun violence."

The problem isn't guns; it's criminals and the failure to apprehend and eliminate criminal mentalities from society permanently--as by capital punishment for crimes where there's no possibility of restitution.

A made for civilian use semiautomatic (one trigger pull one shot) AR-15 is not an oooweee big bad WEAPON OF WAR eek! eek! shriek! like Chuck Schumer LIES.
A M16 with a selector switch full automatic burst firing capacity IS.

Might be a little hard on ammunition but, if a citizen wants to own an M16 (or any other auto-capable weapon), why shouldn't they? Why should any government put in place by citizens have anything to fear from those citizens?

Me dino knows someone who has a federal license to won his MAC-10 submachine gun. Has to be retired by now but was the (when needed) armorer at the state prison that now amounts to my full pension. I watched him fire a clip at the range when yearly NRA requalifying to fire weapons during a week of annual training.

I can still recall an episode of The Untouchables (on TV during the Sixties) that revealed you could walk into a hardware store during the Twenties and buy a Thompson sold with a full 50-round drum without a background check. All you needed was the money to pay for it.

Yes, times have changed. When I was 16, I bought a war surplus 8mm Mauser (Czech made) mail order--about $25 as I recall. Don't remember if an adult had to sign off. But I sure remember getting it along with 50 rounds of 8mm soft point and a cloth bandolier I could put the ammo in.

If I'm not mistaken, it was the U of T Austin shooting (the guy that was sniping from the bell tower) that pretty much ended mail-order purchases of firearms.

When I was 14 and a little bit younger I was buying cherry bombs and M80s over the counter so I could blow up big fire ant hills, make old pails fly high and create depth charge geysers at a lake.
By 16 I was tossing those things out of car windows and learned the Winston cigarettes with the filter removed made the best delayed action time fuse.
That enabled rotten little dino to be at the opposite end of the high school when the little bomb blew, though I could plainly hear it.
Oh,yeah, I could buy and smokes cigarettes by using coin machines placed outside of stores when still riding a bicycle.

Not to get picky, but anything can be made to be a "weapon of war." Look at the French Revolution. The peasants at the barricade weren't sporting much in terms of firearms but they had knives, pitchforks, etc. The notion that we fight wars "only with certain kinds of weapons" is leftist nonsense.

The interesting thing is that Chuck Schumer admitted in the open session of Congress that AR-15-type rifles were "common use." That statement alone invokes Heller, which says that the government may not ban such firearms. So this will pass the Senate, get signed by Biden, and then get shot down by a Federal Judge before it goes anywhere.

This has two purposes. First, the Democrats would love to have this percolate through the Court system long enough to allow some firearm confiscation in Blue States to actually take place. They know its a long shot, but I have to give them credit for going after what they want even though their end goals are complete tyranny, to which I vigorously object.

The second is to try to claw back some of their base, which has been severely eroded due to Democrats' other disastrous policies like Open Borders, Energy (really lack thereof), Economy, and more. They're desperate to hold on to the House and Senate come November because they know that once they lose leadership that their attempts at the Green New Deal are done for another 4-6 years.

I told you this was letting the camel get his nose in the tent. Everyone I know has a 30.06 and they all go hunting in the Fall to fill up their freezers. My BFF (now deceased) was a bow hunter. She brought down a deer every year to feed her dog, a little Bishon (sp).

I have been deer hunting with a (MSR) Winchester Model 100 Semi Auto rifle since the early 1960s.
My department used the Colt AR 15 all through my career but I never had the desire to own one. Do Not believe a word the gun grabbers say. They want any and all Semi Auto weapons banned and if they do get the long guns gone they will be right after the handguns next. The only ones who don't care about any of this are the criminals who love the thought of unarmed citizens.

I seriously contemplated getting a 308 AR for pig hunting back in California before I moved away from the pigs. Now than I'm in mule deer territory I just picked up a beautiful Christensen Arms 6.5 Creedmore bolt action. Getting the Leopold mounted soon and seeing if I can still aim one of these things anymore...haha.

I have one. Nice gun. Hopefully I wont have to use it on a person threatening me. Most likely my two pit bulls would get them first, and hopefully I could call them off before too much damage was done.
