SF has become a cautionary tale. But not many people understand why and how. Actually, I guess this scene has become typical in all of US big cities. So it's a little late for warnings or caution. The cats are already out of the bag.

Edit add: I know I've mentioned it elsewhere in the Gulch, but I've had a couple of work contracts in Oakland/SF area for a month at a time. After the second stint, I had no desire to go back - and never did.
