Limitations are OFTEN the limits of the tools used.
Fonts, before computers, were quite limited.
Having more fonts was REALLY expensive.
Fun fact: UPPER CASE letters. Were stored in the "upper" box, where as the small letters were stored in the LOWER box/case.

English can certainly be viewed a lexical chaotic disaster, or a welcoming lexical diversity, ripe with interesting features and novelty. Probably kills obsessive compulsive people.
