My wife is home-schooling four of our children this year (I have two more in public high school besides) and she is reading to them the classic Laura Ingalls Wilder series. It is quite fascinating from those books the basic snippets of common sense: working hard, dealing with adversity, etc. but what also stands out is that the schooling which was available was a real sacrifice to the adults and therefore they took particular care in monitoring their children's learning. We hear about students in big cities graduating from high school without being able to read, but back before the government took over education, students in grade school were reading far higher than they are now with much broader vocabularies. It's quite telling to look at the examinations that teachers had to pass to become credentialed back then, as they were nothing if not rigorous and very broad in terms of knowledge, vocabulary, grammar, etc. How far we have regressed...
