Going Going Postal

I was surprised to learn that the average postal worker earns $82,000 per year, many of whom have only a high school education. My dad worked 33 years for the postal service and retired in the early 70's making $11,000. Even with inflation, $82K seems awfully high. No wonder we may lose Saturday delivery. We already lost postal vending machines, which I found very convenient. I asked the Postmistress at a local post office about it, and she told me the post office decided to save money buy firing the guy that goes from post office to post office to maintain the machines. Then she gave me a look of disgust. Now people have to wait in line just to buy a stamp. Everyone I know that has worked for the postal service despises management. There are exceptions, of course, but if we need to make cuts in the USPS why not start at the top?

any and all questions, rhetorical or not, which begin with the word "why" and are government related have the same answer - your own variation on "because it's THEM."

micabe2006: I used to get my mail by HCR. I knew she wasn't making it. She is the nicest person ever. Whenever an oversized package came, she'd take it to my door, and this happened often. I gave her a handfull of cash on holidays and in between.

I don't wait in line...I print my own stamps for my boxes and letters and throw 'em in the chute at the post office, unless I catch a mailman in the neighborhood then I just hand them off. Easy peasy, no waiting. The maillady I ran into the other day said she thinks they will give early retirement buy outs and then hire new people for less...perhaps contractors (?). Not having Saturday delivery is just one more day I don't have to make a trip to the post office :) (And the P.O. will still be bankrupt...it's run by the government...duh.)

Oh I am with you there, I work for the USPS but I do not earn $82,000 I earn about $30,000 a year pre taxes. This is because out at are post office we are considered HCR (Highway Contract Routes) we are independent contractors. All we get is a paycheck. No benefits, insurance & we have to buy our own RDH (Right Hand Drive) car or deal with using our own personal cars. Thats what I do. Now they are going to take sat. delivery away so our pay goes from 30,000 to 27,000 or so. Once again this is all BEFORE taxes. since we do not have withholding they me as an individual has to pay both sides of the tax system. Yet everyone else higher up the chain gets to keep their nice cushy jobs and they company provided RHD car. This model need to be turned on it's head. Every mailman that delivers should be an independent contractor & have to fend for themselves. That would save the USPS real money. Then paying everyone on the postal union train's insurance and benefits and pension funds.

I think it's time the USPS moved from the 19th century to the 21st. Buy your postage onlne direct from the USPS, or buy your stamps at Walgreens or a grocery store. Need to send a package? Buy a postal scale and get your postage and mailing sticker at USPS, print it out, and in some cases, they'll pick it up for free..
