I know we disagreed on this in the past and that's OK, but I don't buy this BS for a second. I've read enough on the subject to form an entirely different opinion. Phillip IV of France was broke with his constant wars and extravagant living and was heavily in debt to the Templar Order. The Templars were an order of the Catholic Church and Philip IV had to destroy their relationship to the pope so rounding them up and torturing a number of them into confessing anything was a path to getting out of debt and ending Templar power and influence. Today we say "follow the money" and in Phillip IV's case that's all you need do, but add in an insatiable lust for power and control and it's not hard to see the Templars had to go from his kingdom.

In the following article it's interesting to note that even though Phillip IV's reign of terror and confiscation on the Templar Order began in 1307, only under military pressure was he able to convince the pope to sever relations in 1312.
