The End of 3G Service Exposes The DIrty Secret and Dishonesty Of "Connected" Cars

Excerpt:
"One of the neat things about “connected” things is they can be disconnected – and not by you. Rendering them useless to you and (best part) making you perpetually beholden to whomever (whatever) has control over the “connectivity.”

A lesson – and a warning – comes in the form of the pending disconnect of the 3G wireless network, which will among other things result in the disconnection of 3G “connected” services millions of car owners paid for when they bought their cars, such as remote engine start/door unlock, roadside assistance/emergency crash response and even GPS (navigation). These wireless features depend on “connectivity” – the ability to send and receive data wirelessly.

When they no longer do, they no longer work.

“We’re talking about millions of vehicles that will lose features that were promised to owners, and that no longer will be delivered,” said William Wallace of Consumer Reports. “In some cases, those features are safety features, things that can help them from dying or getting seriously injured after a crash.” "

That is why I kept my 75 CJ5, zero electronics. The ignition is good old points and condenser. Horse and buggy suspension and everything is manual. Not even a radio, not that you could here it anyway over the engine, road noise and wind, :-)
I have the same thought for a any new car as well. I don't want it connected in any way. I always said what happens when they decide to stop supporting that service. You'll have paid all that money for nothing and your car is at their mercy, they control it.

What happens when Tesla's cars start to get older? All of that connected self drive, navigation, camera's and the car itself will stop working. in spite of their promises it will eventually happen to ever car that is connected. It cost them to muc hmoney to upgrade your car, they don't car about the consumer just their bottom line. They think well your car is too old just buy a new one. That is when the DIY and right to repair crowd comes in and hacks it.

Planned obsolescence on steroids. I want my '69 GTX and '78 Jeep CJ7 back!

Too bad the computers in cars can't be easily swapped out by third party inventors to get around all this crap.

My iPhones and cell equipped iPad all go dead on 12/31/2022. Meaning I'll have to spend a fortune to replace them or just go dark.

Pardon my ignorance, but are there not a lot of android cell phones/tablets much less expensive than Apple's ? (I haven't bought a cell phone in a long time so I'm not an expert.;^)

You are correct and the older models are all 3G enabled, too. Bye Bye to all.

Unless you mean for me to switch when I replace the Apples. That's tempting, but I have an awful lot of software infrastructure that is Apple specific built up over many years of use - all that would go away and have to be rebuilt. Hmmm, makes me wonder, do I own Apple products or do Apple products own me?

I understand and that is the downside that has always been the case for Apple customers. A closed system that forces customers to pay exorbitant prices for a restricted system that feeds the Apple monster with every thing a customer wants to do. That's why you have a lot of hardware/software to be replaced if you switch to a more open system. You don't realize it when you start where it leads - sort of like communism.
The rest of the phone makers are all jealous and I suspect they would all love to have captive customers, too.
You still have Linux option for your computers with free alternative software for almost everything, and also the ability to run virtual machines if you have Windows software that you 'must' use.

Linux. Yes, I have exposure to that while developing some industrial apps on the Raspberry Pi platform. I was surprised how well that inexpensive little thing actually performed! BTW, the underlying Unix-like OS on my Apple iMac is very much like Linux (also Unix based, I believe) and even many of the commands are identical. I used the Pi to self teach Python as well. Haven't touched it for a couple of years so I figure it has moved along since I last used it.

I use a Pi to stream my music and have to make time to build a Linux computer to replace my W7 computer. Haven't done much with Linux lately either.

I just put Mint Mate on a 10 year old Laptop. Loving it so far. Breathed new life into it. There just so much background garbage running in Windows. Getting my first Pi soon to run Java Model Railroad Interface for my layout. But plan on experimenting some as well. Arduinos are on the horizon for automating some scenes on the layout. Basic Stamps sure dropped off the face of the earth.

As Markus says Linux Mint brings old computers back to life. I have found it is hard to buy a computer without W or Apple software, but it can be done and I have. We no longer have a W in the house ;-)

I just went through having to get a new Tracfone to replace my $7.00 touch screen 3G model with 1900 minutes left on it. Tracfone was good enough to send me a $40 none touch screen 4G model with the minutes. My cell phone is used just for emergency health problems and to call cable company when $10 a month cable phone is out. It was useless as a mobile phone when I was trying Youtube TV and thy used my IP address which is across the boarder in Illinois, so I could not get my WI sports and was stuck with the Bears, etc. from Chicago. Cable company threatening big increase in price in June so I will have to get tough with them, if that will get me anywhere. Strange how they offer businesses 200 Mbps internet for $50 per month and gives me 100 Mbps internet for $70 per month.

Count your blessings. We get 8Mbps maximum for $70 a month. No alternatives here at present. Next door they get 12Mbps because we are just barely too far away (at the middle of a circle.) When we got here it was max of 4Mbps.

We recently bought a new Lexus RX350 with all of the TOL tech gadgets. The salesman was in our age group 60-70 YO and tried his best to show us the gadgets but failed miserably and he knew it. They sent out their wiz kid, 24 or so and in just a few minutes she had all systems set up just the way we wanted them. She was not much of a teacher but she sure could finger F the display and get it to do whatever was necessary in the setup plan. Whether or not any of this stuff relies on 3G is a question yet to be answered but we sure as heck did pay for all this garbage we hardly use since the original setup.

My Truck has Manual Locking Hubs. A big lever that comes through the floor to shift the transfer case. AM/FM with only two speakers. Manual Door Locks and Manual Windows. Vinyl Seats and No Carpet. It’s perfect.

Well, never did pay for OnStar, no remote garage opener set, got rid of GPS after 3 month trial. Have never plugged laptop or phone into car. I love cars, and figure the less outsidide intervention the better, just me and the car is best. Cars never did work that well in cold weather as computers were not meant for ice storm climate.

I can understand systems like GPS, Reader/transmitter type hywy toll interfaces being reliant upon a network but your Key Phob?...doesn't the phob/car starter, etc, contain the 3G transmitting ability internally?
I can't believe your car starter/key phob/ back up/proximity sensors rely on a cell tower or satellite.

Glad I kept my simple 07 ranger...it does not rely upon the outside world except for a gas station.

This particular topic is a double-edged sword. We do like our gadgets (most of us do) and whenever the next big thing comes along, we want that too. Cellular service is a constantly emerging and shifting market. Back in the days of pre-cellular service, it took a couple of amateur radio operators to come up with the concept. This advanced to analog wireless, which then became digital 2G.... 3G.... 4G.... 4G LTE.... 5G. Every advance is fueled by the desire for services and data.

The automakers who 'promised' all this gadgetry obviously knew these technologies would shift and be rendered obsolete. If an automaker wants to keep their clientele, they'll figure out a way to retrofit the older models with 4G LTE or even 5G connection. Even so, the technology will not end at 5G and we shouldn't expect it to.

One could simply reject technology altogether, but then one must ask how far back one should go. The early 90's? 80's? 70's? Return to horse and buggy?? Everyone has a line where they say 'enough' and they should be happy with that decision. When you think about it, the Amish have it pretty good.

In the long run, what car we drive shouldn't matter. Whether we have prepper food stashes for 30 years shouldn't matter. What we want to do with our own lives we should do and let others decide for themselves.
