Hiding is not living, it is not the answer. I will die violently if I have to for me and mine before I hideaway. A faraday cage is great except that anything an electronic device may connect to may not be there and what you have (power/vehicle) will make you a shiny target for looters.

If it comes to that, why not "die violently" fighting among friends who generally share your convictions?

There are numerous small communities across the US (and perhaps Canada) who voted (or would have voted) at least 70-30 for Trump.

Wouldn't life be better in such a place rather than hiding out as an individual in the middle of nowhere? Isn't there at least a little room for voluntary community action that is positive and constructive--as in defense against looters?

I don't see it as hiding. The federal government knows the location.

        voluntary (mandatory) isolation? Same difference.

Voluntary means you decide where and when it starts and stops.

Coercion to choose is what we're seeing as 'voluntary isolation' these days, coercion into accepting the jab, coercion into wearing masks, coercion into staying several feet apart...all considered voluntary these days. Where have we the opportunity to start and stop this freedom crippling madness? 24/7/365 everywhere you look (even sling your search field on the windows task bar, sticks covid fear in your face) to make you think its your choice, but its not.

Sadly, I don't thinka that word means what you (or I) thinka it means anymore.

No one can answer that question for anyone else. I'm old enough to know not to even try, even with blood.

Even so, A=A, and in this case reality sucks and it doesn't look to be getting any better.

I believe the simplest solution is to set up to survive without electricity. Keep some silver on hand for transactions. When TSHTF being the house with a generator running and the lights on just makes you a highly visible target.

Have you read "One Second After?" It is the first book in a trilogy.

Who's the author? Sounds interesting. I'm an SF fan from way back. Like since I was about 12. Then, sometime in the '80's, SF became science fantasy and no longer interested me.

Check out the link below. There is aforeword by Newt Gingritch. This is a novel. There is science but no fiction in the science. If that makes any sense.
                          Author: William R. Forstchen

I put it in my wish list for early next year. I'm interested in the emp. Have you seen pictures---videos---of the atomic fireballs in thermonuclear detonations? I can't figure out why that fireball only expands to a certain volume and then collapses. That particular question is on my to-do list as well.

Did you know the temperature inside that fireball is around 10,000,000 degrees Kelvin or more?

                            Here's a good video:

                            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXHJX...

Where does the heat, most likely in the form of electromagnetic energy, go? Is that what forms the emp? Guess I'll check it out in my Tipler. Releasing the binding energy of the nucleus?

(We need to keep reminding world leaders...)

I am not sure about the fireball above atmosphere.
The sledge hammer is the Compton effect. The magnetic field grows at an exponential rate.

I'll have to look that up. I'm currently reading Descartes' "Discourse on Method", but it's pretty easy going. Then I want to read his "La Geometrie" as I've been wondering how exactly he himself saw the application of algebra to geometry.
(Note: I've always thought the "Cartesian Method" was the xy coordinate system; the 2-space and 3-space dimensional positioning system for algebraic curves. I'm finding out it is simply Descartes' views on "How will we know".

That's an interesting end of the world as we know it map.
Me dino blows my big honking carnosaur nose at any predicted submersion zones. "Let's go Al Gore!"
What I've read and seen on TV about the Yellowstone caldera volcano indicates that a super eruption would destroy South Dakota and the widespread destruction not indicated by the map from the ash cloud would make all the gagging to death at Pompeii look like an anthill in comparison. That widespread ash cloud would even reach where I live in Alabama. Fortunately for us, odds are many more centuries should pass before it ever devastate most of North America once again.
Yeah, I can just see Birmingham being a nuke target that's just a quick drive from my home and everything going to hell as a high crime anarchy zone.
Being 74, legally handicapped for taking up a blue-lined parking space and unable to run, I share the sentiment expressed here by AJAshinoff.
I'll be all coiled up and waiting like that rattler on that "Don't Tread On Me" Gadsden Flag.

If that caldera goes, it will take out most of the Western United States, according to the predictions. It won't just be South Dakota, but Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, and probably extend into southern Canada, Eastern Oregon and Washington, Northern Nevada, North Dakota, and Colorado. And that's just the initial effects from the blast/eruption. The resulting ash cloud would be predicted to blanket not only the United States, but half the globe, ushering in a nuclear winter. And if the geologists are correct, we're about 800,000 years overdue...

I'm not going to bother worrying about that one because if it goes, I'll find out about 15 minutes before I'm dead and gone.

That's ridiculous. There isn't any need to hide like that.

As for being ready for an Electromagnetic Pulse, we actually are in good shape. Even another Carrington Event wouldn't have all that much effect on us, because almost all long range communication is done over fiber now and the power grid is really tough and breakers would short any large imposed pulse to ground.

People are people, whether they're in a large metropolitan area or in a small community hiding.

I'm not impressed with their map of the States, showing the 'submersion zone' including the Rockies and the High Plains (are we really going to see the seas rise more than a mile???). Plus, it ignores what happens when Yellowstone blows (theoretically the western third of the States will be uninhabitable).

Running away is not the answer.

I've heard of communities like this and what I found was anything but Gulch. If we did our own, it would be better, but putting a target on our backs doesn't sound appealing. The only way I can think of to use this idea would be to build a small town on top of the bunkers, with entrances disguised by individual houses and landscaping. Gulching in the open, if you will. Current communities are headed for the one-boss Cuffy Meigs model. They have only one uniting point, f--- the feds. That will not keep their communities stable without a central power, they will become the thing they hate.

Thanks for posting this. I find it very interesting and somewhat appealing. I think that, if there were a natural disaster, it would be a brilliant place to wait it out and then work from after; however, I don't think I'd want to hide out there in case of war or something humans may have a chance to fight and win. I guess I'm stubborn but I'd rather stand for something than fall for anything.

Before I retired, I was a civilian engineering contractor for the Air Force for 35 years, I can speak to the EMP aspect. your government has some Rad-Hard electronics, by no means everything. A lot, if not most, of what they use is COTS, commercial off the shelf. Plugged in or not, if it is not heavily shielded, it will burn. Faster and more modern devices (smaller IC feature size) are most at risk. The Russians take a total different tact, they use vacuum tubes for critical comms. We also employ micro-sized vacuum tubes for critical comms. (As small as transistors). Aside from saving your precious electronics, it won't matter if the rest of the world has reset to 1822. Back then, people were equipped to live off-grid. Today hundreds of millions will riot, then starve. I am old. I'm unsure as to how much effort I am willing to exert to eek out the last few years. That part of the country gets cold. Real cold. My old bones don't relish that idea.

I did some temporary clerical work back in the early '80's. I was sent to an architect's office around 1984, and while glancing---well, okay, perusing---the files I found plans for a bunker type arrangement for the baby bell: Qwest, in Colorado.

It was designed to survive an emp. At least so far as what was known at that time.

We had a bomb shelter when we lived in NM, would rather have died than been in it! I do have some Faraday Bags for my laptop and phone, but of what use, if all is gone.off grid?
Besidds, I would want a two person, spit floor plan with open floor plan, can't stand anything else now.

I live in Sedona Az, my house is anchored to an iron oxide impregnated bedrock shelf which a portion of which had to be blasted out to accommodate the foundation of the house. plus the ground surface around the house is surrounded by iron oxide rocks. So, I'm confident that there is adequate protection against an EMP from a CME.

There's a market for this, I think. I understand the super-wealthy have been at it for a while with much more lavish digs. Several years ago I was approached to help engineer a remote cattle ranch in New Zealand and I understand that was for Ted Turner. I was talking with them about wind and solar power.

GMO seeds are (presently) only available to commercial farming enterprises. If you are one of those, you'd have to sign a contract with the seed provider. Just go with heirloom or open-pollinated seeds. Hybrids generally don't reproduce true to type. I'm a Certified Instructor with the Square Foot Gardening Foundation and keep abreast with such issues.
