Actually there is a program that was always available created by MS-DOS. While the Delete program codes the data as deleted then frees the space to be written over with new data as required, so some of the space is recoverable. However the ERASE program actually did turn that previous data to binary code "0". That program was removed from user access in DOS 6.2 I believe, but was available to those who knew about it. I know this because I use to use it to recover files back in the 1970's. I believe it is still used when you partition a drive to ensure a clean slate.

Even erased data can sometimes be recovered. There are companies that specialize in doing this; Data Recovery Inc is one. They are not cheap.

Of course in an audit you would need to be sure that the company has not been infiltrated, nor any of its employees compromised.

I personally verified that Erase was permanent. Files were all zeros on data dump. Current software may be different depending upon the software. But back in the good old days on IBM and Window machines, hence the warning msgs you get for Delete and remove as in deleting email files.

This article reminds me of the Qanon reports...all that stuff about deleted files that may have been found, bad images of Hunter Biden doing bad things that might have been on the laptop. All sizzle and no steak. Give me the steak...
