When a big company I once worked for listed a job posting that included the phrase "diverse candidates welcome" was code for "white male need not apply".

I was actually in a meeting the other day where a lady I work with said that they are looking for a candidate who "must be a non-white female". I was caught a little flat-footed on that remark....

I don't necessarily think AA is thr best way to handle alcoholism. It seems to be of the "tade one addiction for another" variety--trading alcoholism for superstition (religion).

I agree with your points on Affirmative Action: it's racist in nature and will result in some substandard graduates.

As I mentioned earlier, I probably should have specified that this references Affirmative Action. I didn't even think about Alcoholics Anonymous until after I had posted it. Yes, I agree that Alcoholics Anonymous is a worthwhile endeavor.

AA has always meant Alcoholics Anonymous to me. I don't know how Alcoholics Anonymous is racist, so I tend to discount your point, whatever it might be.

The entire AA is racist, it assumes certain races cannot succeed without "help." The supposed need for such a program was always racist and always excused K-12 failures in this country, where these children were to have learned. Our school system onced hired a lecturer to tell teachers "poor kids can't learn", met with no challenge by teachers present. It is true that the IQ of blacks average apx. 85, compared to 99 for Hispanics and a mere 100 for whites. It drops as they progress through gov. schools for all races, not to rise again until about age 40. Yes, I recently revisited the Bell Curve, which I retained to see how all the ruor of the time would end up.

Give the poor Dimocrats a break: if it wasn't for their double standards, they wouldn't have ANY standards, at all.

My GPA was used to qualify for access to Engineering.

But Minority Students had 0.5 added to their GPA to make up for their "lack" of preparation.

I didn't disagree with the concept, but the application. Do this based on the SCHOOL the child went to (mine was pretty bad), NOT the color of the skin of the person. If they went to a worse school, give them more boost.

But to be clear, 2 young men who got the 0.5 added to their GPAs... One wore sweaters that Dr. Huxtable couldn't afford! He attended private schools, with private tutoring his entire life. His father paid more in taxes than my father EVER EARNED. The other person was not that well-off... But went to a private school, and had great grades and a far better education than I ever saw (or knew existed).

Did these 2 people need 0.5 added to their GPA? Not at all... Doing this based on Color was even worse. Because THEIR entrance to Engineering was MARKED as AA, and not based on the skills the they actually brought to the table! And they were NOT ALLOWED to turn it down! Wow...

I completely agree... We fail our children when they are young. In so many ways.

But worse, we can't even teach teachers.... I suggested to one new teacher, that SORTING everyone by "Ability per subject", and grouping the classes accordingly would produce the best possible results... She said "That Seems Racist!"... Race was NEVER mentioned. The fact that she believes this would be sorting by race IS THE PROBLEM. It doesn't. It sorts by ability. And then you teach to the abilities of the group. Because they all probably have similar strengths and weaknesses.

But, NOPE... The Race card is played to prevent ANYONE from getting ahead.

Don't presume there is a rational answer. Further don't presume that's not on purpose. America is under attack and has been for years. Not metaphorically but literally and if you try to bring this topic up in public you are deemed a radical. If you try to speak against Affirmative Action you are deemed a racist. Attack the person not the idea is right out of the communist manifesto. Think what happened to anyone who would dare to use Barack Hussein Obama's full name when speaking about Barry Soetoro, oops I meant the President.

I have two brother-in-laws who work for an unspecified tech company. One is the manager of the group and when we get together for a monthly event we call "Crappy Taco Night" it is fascinating to hear them talk about this tech company and their intersectional hiring practices. Both my brothers-in-law are high performers, but because they are the dreaded White Males, they are looked down on in comparison to other members of their group who check the boxes - but are technically incompetent. And I do mean literally incompetent. To the point that my brother-in-law has to watch for when this person checks in code and remove it before it makes it to the main build because it is so bad. It just makes me cringe.

When me just a simple dino originally read the title, me instantly asked meself, "How in the world can Alcoholics Anonymous be crippling higher education institutions?! How?! How?! How?!"

I remember graduating #1 one in my tech class but #3 got the job I wanted because of AA. Even with a family referral within the company (big 3) I was told that they have to fill minority interests and would not even schedule an interview since they were not going to hire a white boy. Today BLM will tell you that AA might get them an interview but not a job. Not true. They were evaluated by how their staff looked, not on interviews. It was not yet referred to as reverse discrimination but in fact it could be called nothing else.

In the mid-70's my late husband lost his job of 5 years to a woman of color in order to meet that AA quota. The company lost a good, experienced worker for the joy of training an unqualified, inexperienced employee in his stead. All three parties lost with that decision.

I worked a 27 year career starting in 1974 under affirmative action. My initial hire date was held up for 8 months until enough minorities had been hired. Throughout my career every promotional exam I took was held up until they figured out the correct scoring curve so more minorities were promoted. AA turned out to be nothing but a bad joke designed to hold back those who perform.

Given the history of it and how little good it has actually done, I think the case can effectively be made that it never should have been implemented in the first place. They tried to short-circuit the education process by pretending that simply sending people to college would improve their lives. As a result, these unfortunate people got into advanced programs they were not prepared for and the vast majority dropped out or failed before finishing. So all that really happened was that you created failure in the group you wanted to help and prevented those from benefiting who were actually prepared. It's the classic case of unintended consequences being completely ignored.

Well AA insanity is enough to send anyone into needing the services of AA.

The moral of that story? Don't say anything when somebody mentions race. Just let them say it and quietly nod. Helps if you don't smile, too. A blank stare is suggested...

AA (Affirmative Action) is the gemstone and cornerstone of the "Jim Crow" entitlement ideology. The old Jim Crow, ended in the late '60s, essentially upheld AA for white people, the New Jim Crow, beginning in the mid '70s, upholds AA for black people. We all should know by now any implementation of "Jim Crow" doesn't work and is very un-American. If at first you don't learn from history...

Regarding what the professors in the article are observing, the same was lightly discussed in a '90s book called "The Bell Curve" and the authors were roasted on the "racist stake" for even mentioning what the data seemed to indicate. Rational discussions on the causes were impossible and still are. These professors blaming themselves is irrational at best and is probably a result of their indoctrination into a false aspect of the New Jim Crow (all white people are racist and guilty).
