Today I Quit

Today's the day I tell my boss I'm wrapping it up. Oh...I'm giving a few months notice. Nothing like John Galt - standing up and walking out. But, I've been overworked too long and will be the youngest in my organization to pull the plug, ever. Been running the numbers over and over and the 300 pound gorilla in the room is my willingness to go do something else for a living. I'm an engineer and have worked extremely hard for 31 years to be excellent at what I do. My reward working for others?...More work. So, I quit. It's been an amazing ride. I've fought battles that would blow your minds in terms of the ethics involved. I've also done some amazing work in the area of aerospace. My main gig for the past several years has been in healthcare and I've been deep in the government/healthcare complex. What I see there isn't promising for the general public. All I can say is "be an informed consumer" as opposed to being an idiot who worships anybody in a long, white coat. When COVID started to overwhelm our medical facilities I was the guy in the center of the effort to help facilities keep functioning. I'm glad I was there when I was needed for that. Time to spend more time with my kids, play more golf, and occasionally take in a higher hourly rate...

Oohh, you did the "E" word....ouch. Do you put on shock collars and cross invisible fences too?
I'm at 32 years with two of my businesses running consecutively from 2008 through 2019. I still have my shingle up after a 300 mile move. I'm actually considering employment for another, as the munitions factory is really ramping up in my town....;)

By the way ... I don't know if you are on MeWe, but they have several groups on RVing. I don't RV, but I noticed when looking through their 'Travel' groups. Also several groups on Objectivism, but I still come here more.

I add my congratulations as well! Sometime when you are bored (like when it's too rainy to golf), your story of how the heck you went from Aerospace Engineering to healthcare is bound to be interesting. Your story above sounds similar to mine (Nuclear instead of Aerospace, though). Enjoy the golf!

Good for you! As for me I am self employed. In the middle of my career (22 years) I sold my business to work for a large business in Manhattan, New York. Big mistake - I suck as an employee. Having been on the other side of the check book I quickly realized the BS management was claiming about expenses and income and I pointed out the discrepancies to my fellow employees after our staff meetings. I was fired (how could that have happened??) and returned to business ownership. I am much better employer than employee. After my departure from New York there was a coup d'etat in the business and management heads rolled. I kind of felt good about that. For now I am still self employed but have scaled back on what I do. The cool thing is that when you are my age I can be crabby and they say, "Oh, that's just Ben - don't pay attention."

Hey dear, why don't you start your healthcare career looking into the thousands spent for salaries in the Federally Qualified Health Centers? Woo woo! That's a whistle. Paying a clerk $20/hour? yeah. $100K for an Exec. Dir.

Funny you mention a motorhome...fresh in our Funemployment, we bought a brand-new 26 foot motorhome made by Winnebago and have in the intervening years, put approx. 50K miles on it, touring this beautiful country including two trips to Commifornia from Georgia and back...we love it!...my advice to you is to thoroughly research any purchase of a motorhome including a used vehicle which is a viable option and one which many on the RV forums I belong to recommend...am all-in on beers and cheers if we ever get out your way again...later, dude

I'm in an adjacent state often as I have my own Gulch home there now. I have several (as Albert would say) "Funemployment" target places to work, with a couple over by my Gulch. One of my plans is to play every golf course in the northern half of that state - it's very spread out high desert, with lots of beautiful, cheap golf. May acquire a little motorhome for that task. I'm the last of my family with any presence in Kalifornia. Cal is an extremely beautiful place being run by people hell-bent on destroying it. I could elaborate (a lot) but I'll save that for the day those in this forum can meet up over a beer...

Wellcome to the ranks of the Funemployed as we have been/are since 2015...I retired after 30 years in the Haz-Waste/Environmental Remediation/Emergency Response business...spent the last six years prior to retiring building two NEW Nuke plants in Georgia...becoming Funemployed is the best thing that we have willed to happen in a long time...Bonne Chance!

Congrats, Abaco. Your happiness level will start to climb as soon as you are free.
Are you getting out of Commifornia, too?
