Life in Prison: for forcibly cutting men's beards?

Federal prosecutors are requesting a life sentence for an Amish bishop for organizing a campaign of forced beard cutting.
I'm all for harsh sentences for murderer's, rapists, etc. But the punishment should fit the crime. Don't get me wrong, this guy is no saint. But life in prison for the "hate crime" of cutting a guy's beard off is not right.
The Obama DOJ seems to be completely out of control.

Interesting article. I think you'll generate lots of good discussion here. It is unclear to me when Federal and Sate law step in with regards to certain religious sects and american indian reservations. maybe someone else is more familiar with that.
This guy sounds like a holy terror, but I concur that life in prison does not seem quite right, even with the duress members of this group went through. But, there are despots everywhere
