Some, maybe all, use a declaration of emergency to "temporarily" assume dictatorial powers. They grab all they can. Then if the "emergency" ends, a minor rollback of the exercising of those powers feels like such a relief to the sheep, that nobody speaks up and much of it remains in place. There are a few of us left here in CA that don't fit into either of the two groups mentioned by 25n56il4, but I can understand we aren't enough to show on the radar.

In my area of CA, what I see are the victims of ... "the comprachicos of the mind. They do not place a child into a vase to adjust his body to its contours. They place him into a school to adjust him to society." The government schools have crippled the minds of children who are now old enough to be adults. People are sheep, especially since PC has mutated into Cancel Culture. In any situation that requires a decision, there is no mind to rely on, so people look to each other to see clues about what everyone else is going to do.

People just assume that if something really is wrong, "somebody" will do something about it. It's similar to the bystander effect, when an injured person is surrounded by so many observers that nobody moves in to help, but it's gotten much worse. It is rare to find the person who is willing to say or do what is known to be right when there is a risk that too many others might think it is wrong. Even if that person may fear that staying silent could mean death.

Those who know this is not an exaggeration...you don't need to bother reading my example that follows.
====The End, unless you want an example====

On a flight (takeoff) out of Dallas-Fort Worth (known for wind shear and other hazards) as the plane began to rotate, an explosion shook the plane enough for a couple of the ceiling emergency lights to drop down and light up, and the front wheel set back down onto the runway. The animated lights on the floor began flashing toward the exit, and we could all feel the seatbelts dig into our laps as the brakes slowed us very quickly from 180mph to probably still not less than 60mph. I knew the sound of a jet engine backfiring in a crosswind, so I wasn't overly concerned. As the cabin attendants used duct tape to secure the two emergency lights that would not stay back up on their own, the plane made two very fast U-turns as the captain came on and said, "just an engine misfire, happens quite often here, we're cleared to try again." It would have been nice to maybe slow down and make it look as if they were checking all systems again, but I realized the priority was to get into the air before any of the passengers spoke up, otherwise the flight would be scrubbed...for everyone. As we were holding onto our seats against the side force of the second U-Turn, I looked around and saw silent panic. I saw eyes wide open, pure and naked fear, as they searched for and met other frightened eyes, with a plaintive look as if asking, "Isn't somebody going to say something." Without a pause, as the plane was mostly realigned with the runway, the captain throttled up hard, and this time, as we rotated, many of the passengers tightly gripped the armrests and took a deep breath, as if it might be their last. Of course, it wasn't and the remainder of the flight was uneventful.

It went very quickly, and it was probably only a 2-minute drill. Clearly, both the tower (giving instant clearance to retry) and the pilot (only slowing enough to make those U-turns without flipping over) knew that you have a certain period of time during which, even when in fear of death, people will not speak up or act without assurance that the rest of the crowed is with them. SHEEP!

Here and now, it is worse than others possibly not following or going along with you if you choose to violate directives that are wrong or make no sense--the question is now becoming, "Which of those others might report you to authorities?"

    "Your papers, please."

Gotta admit something...not my fault... I was born at Methodist Hospital in Los Angeles, California. I liked your airline story. When the Lockheed Electras were going down in Texas, a Braniff flight landed and landed and landed in Houston, Tx. Bounce bounce bounce.

It all depends on what is allowed by their State Legislatures. People challenged Oregon's ridiculous and draconian provisions and lost on the grounds that the Governor was acting with the powers granted by the Legislature. Michigan's Governor - by contrast - lost and her control was terminated by a State Supreme Court which found she had exceeded her authority.

Some states simply didn't have the intestinal fortitude to challenge things, like Idaho. A small group of Legislators during an emergency session could have done something, but weaseled out by claiming that they couldn't bring anything up in a special session except those things authorized by the Governor. We'll see if anything changes in a month when the Legislature meets in full, regular session, because there are a lot of people fed up with the Governor's arbitrary extensions and especially his delegation of authority over policy to the local health districts.

To me, I would consider it reasonable that in order to call a "state of emergency" the governor could do so using executive powers, but those would extend no more than two weeks before the Legislature would have to vote in an extension of two more weeks (and so on). If part of the call to a state of emergency was to issue lockdowns, all individuals and businesses would be exempt from paying taxes for those two weeks and all non-emergency personnel (police, firefighters, EMS, etc.) would be furloughed without pay for as long as the lockdown was in effect. If the government is going to shut down life for others, they need to be also shut down.

Just saw a report yesterday that 17% of the restaurant industry is now gone for good. Many entrepreneurs have been forced out of business because they aren't granted the exceptions given to big box stores. So hypocritical.

All very good ideas, especially the elimination of taxes for businesses forced to shutdown. A step too far, however worth consideration, the shutdown “authority,” in addition to losing salary and benefits like the shutdown victims, would be responsible fir costs associated with doing business: leases, utilities, etc..

They can ONLY GOVERN WITH THE CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED!

    I will NOT comply!
A Private Store can ask me to wear a mask. But I am TEMPTED to make one out of FISH NET STOCKINGS! [It makes no mention of the QUALITY of the mask, LOL]

Funny how BLM and ANTI-FA can burn down cities with impunity. Because they REFUSE to be governed. But we (more conservative/libertarian minded) value rules and laws so highly, we allow them to enforce bad ones against us.

When Society Stops Listening as a whole, government will change.
There is a SUBTLE TRUTH that they CANNOT JAIL US ALL!

This is the time for civil disobedience. Let the collectivists somehow gather up enough people to enforce these unconstitutional mandates. Otherwise, people will passively and actively resist on their own.

I plan on making a business trip in the next ten days. I have to drive from my home in eastern Pennsylvania to western Ohio. I will have the exposure of being on three major interstates across mostly two states. We'll see what happens.

I'm talking about elected officials. I recognize the authority dictators have. But, by what reasoning would citizens allow a governor to dictate such ridiculously stupid rules? They are doing so in California (the land of fruits and nuts).

I seriously doubt this would work in Texas!

I think it would. Was just down there a couple weeks ago, and saw a LOT of compliance with masking....far past the point of what we put up with in OK.

Of course, Texas is a big place, and the people are not all the same. But I can see in the bigger cities quite a bit of obedience to lockdowns. Isn’t that what Shelly Luther was in trouble for? it was the early days of lockdowns and she finally said. “Enough.”

And Oh BTW, there’s a HUGE contingent of people going after the OK governor’s hide because he insists on NOT forcing lockdown or masks (except in State buildings). It’s true that we are having a high incidence of COVID, but guess what? We would anyway. Masks make zero difference at all.
