Remember, Remember the Fifth of November

For many years now, we have a family gathering November 5th, and watch ‘V for Vendetta”. This year, we are postponing the gathering as our son is overseas in Qatar for a few more weeks. But still it is on my mind today so I thought I’d share a few of my favorite quotes.

“Since mankind's dawn, a handful of oppressors have accepted the responsibility over our lives that we should have accepted for ourselves. By doing so, they took our power. By doing nothing, we gave it away. We've seen where their way leads, through camps and wars, towards the slaughterhouse.”

“Let me show you firmness of my belief.”

“You wear a mask for so long, you forget who you were beneath it.”

“Knowledge, like air, is vital to life. Like air, no one should be denied it.”

“Our integrity sells for so little, but it is all that we really have. It is the very last inch of us. But within that inch, we are free... An inch; it is small, and it is fragile, and it is the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it or give it away; we must never let them take it from us.”

I dug some old CDs from storage recently & picking out a new one to pop in on the ride home from work yesterday, I saw the V For Vendetta audiobook and thought "It's been awhile and it certainly seems relevant these days, so why not?" & popped it in. ....didn't even make the connection until seeing your post this morning that yesterday was the 5th of November.

Everyone has been going crazy lately over political views that may not even wind up mattering in the end (because we seem to have bought into the hype, even making enemies of family & friends, instead of coming together on what SHOULD be agreed upon and ensured first: "How can we KNOW that our votes are being accurately & honestly taken into account in the first place? Because if our votes don't matter, neither do our views"), so how's it going to feel if we get someone who NOBODY voted for, like Pelosi, showing that we made enemies out of family & friends just because the TV said to & we got free virtue signals (already spent) as our 30 pieces of silver. Reality is a matter of perception, & perception is subject to suggestion. That's literally what "magic" is: The art of mis-direction of attention to create an illusion in perception (as seen on TV).

I've been working on myself instead (digging deep into things that have been long forgotten to figure out my own "personal myth" & recover/reclaim that last inch), alone since that's what it takes to get away from all the bombardments of people & advertising trying to get me to adopt their products or views, and discovering some interesting things that have been making a lot more sense out of the underlying patterns (in the inside AND outside world).

The movie Dark City is another very relevant one these days, IMHO. Spoiler alert to the underlying theme: The green room that the aliens gather and focus their chattering teeth in to control the machine that makes changes in other people's lives in the real world (and give them fake lives and false memories): Yeah, that's a metaphor for the mind and the hero learns how to take it back.

I've not seen Dark City. I'll look for it.
Reading Atlas Shrugged every few years feels like a reunion with old friends. Watching V every year is a family holiday of sorts; it feels truer and truer every year but still manages to be fortifying.
Plus, we always have eggies in a basket for the occasion, with lots of butter :-)

“Where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission.”
