Yale epidemiologist says hydroxychloroquine is 'the key to defeating COVID-19'

Risch says the drug is most effective "when given very early in the course of illness, before the virus has had time to multiply beyond control."

Though according to Risch the benefits of the drug are clear, he nevertheless concedes that the subject "has become highly politicized."

"For many, it is viewed as a marker of political identity, on both sides of the political spectrum," he said. "Nobody needs me to remind them that this is not how medicine should proceed."

He also argues that "the drug has not been used properly in many studies," and that delays in administering the drug have reduced its effectiveness.

"In the future," Risch says in the column, "I believe this misbegotten episode regarding hydroxychloroquine will be studied by sociologists of medicine as a classic example of how extra-scientific factors overrode clear-cut medical evidence."

"But for now," he adds, "reality demands a clear, scientific eye on the evidence and where it points."

Question ? When was the last Dr. Fauci actually treated a patient?

Ben_C I've been wondering the same for months and don't have an answer. I do know he's been a government bureaucrat for about 4 decades now. When asked a question you can almost see him lick his finger and put it up to see which way the wind is blowing before answering - typical of a bureaucrat, not a doctor.

Seems to a brave act in publishing Dr Risch by Newsweek.

There is an underscore between org/ and Gilead, site will not accept!

Now primarily a marketing machine to sell drugs of dubious benefit, this industry uses its wealth and power to co-opt every institution that might stand in its way, including the U.S. Congress, the Food and Drug Administration, academic medical centers, and the medical profession itself

Two very topical pics. The second showing gross hypocrisy is hilarious.

Besides hydroxychloroquine, there's also the route Taiwan took, which is early treatment with nebulizer-delivered corticosteroids. Taiwan has had only seven COVID deaths. In both treatment protocols, the key is early treatment, which is counter to the WHO/Fauci advice to wait until the symptoms become severe. The first is aimed at saving the patient, while the second is about controlling resources. I think I prefer the first approach myself.

If Trump had said that it was bad then they would be all over how great it is. It really is Trumps fault for saying that it helps.

Spot on. Positions on this argument are given long before data are reviewed. Either:
    - Trump is right
    - Trump can't be right

Not entirely different than people here arguing about Trump. He isn't an Objectivist, but he is better than the (single not continuum) alternative.

‘On Wednesday Dr Anthony Fauci, a leading member of the White House coronavirus task force, told the BBC that hydroxychloroquine was not effective against the virus.
"We know that every single good study - and by good study I mean randomised control study in which the data are firm and believable - has shown that hydroxychloroquine is not effective in the treatment of Covid-19," he said.
Last month, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautioned against using the drug to treat coronavirus patients, following reports of "serious heart rhythm problems" and other health issues.”

Study specifically on effect of HCQ on heart rhythm. Salah, April 29, 2020. Northshore, NY
At doses used- No arrhythmogenic deaths, 7 patients discontinued out of the 2,019 for QT prolongation.
If I read it right, a minor issue at most.

There is another study, I have lost the ref. that says the same thing.
I have not come across reports of "serious heart rhythm problems".
This is a drug used for ~ 60 years!

That is the message that the Frontline Doctors were explaining in their press conference. iirc, Dr. Simone Gold said that the few cases of QT prolongation were in patients that had been taking CQ for years, and even in that dosage over time there were a very low incidence.

Fauci is not an unbiased or reliable source of information on COVID.
Now the FDA says HCQ can help fight COVID.
I wouldn't trust either of them.
Sorry to hear about the effect on other patients. I have seen it first hand, too. Millions are being negatively affected by the stupid policies thanks to the inaccurate advice of so-called government experts.

Meanwhile, Tens of thousands of Lupus Patients, [including my wife] whom rely on HydroC as the only drug that treat the debilitating effects and pain of Lupus, can no longer get the drug, because government entities have commandeered the entire supply under the clearly unproven theory that it might help fight Covid. So we are taking away a drug that has been proven to help tens of thousands of Lupus patients, to POSSIBLY give to other patients, who might POSSIBLY be helped DESPITE the clear prevailing and growing scientific evidence to the contrary. This is what happens when politicians play doctor. [of course they do play doctors on TV, maybe that’s the real problem].

"the only drug" I doubt that.
"it might fight covid" It does.
Despite the upper case used, that "clear prevailing and growing scientific evidence" does not exist, studies that claim HCQ does not work are fraudulent, the recent retracted Lancet paper is just one example.
The claim of virus sufferers- no alternative, unpleasant death, Lupus and athritis suffers have debilitating effects and pain. How to choose?

Politicians are indeed playing doctor. That is the problem.
The solution is get government out of it, it should be sold over-the-counter with no prescription, no price control, the price will go up, and that is as it should be to bring more onto the market.
