What Capitalism Can Do When Allowed, And Communism Never Will

"In his Pre-Requisites of Socialism, written back in 1919, Trotsky argued how the technological gap had become so large it wasn’t realistic to expect the socialist system (of co-operatives) to have to catch up. Instead:

“It is evident that if this took place the co-operative societies would then simply have automatically to expropriate all capitalist undertakings,"

I started to write that I read 451 first. Then I started to recall I was reading a lot of Bradbury via a mail order science fiction book club before I saw 451 on one of those whirl around book racks that used to be in drug stores.
Memory can get murky when you can recall the dinosaur ages. For sure I saw the 451 movie last.
I know I read The Martian Chronicles beforeI saw that miniseries during the Seventies when I still had 4 channels and a TV antenae on the roof.

I really enjoyed reading Bradbury. The Martian Chronicles was a good read, but the mini-series wasn't done very well. I just watched it again recently.

Yep, 4 channels and rabbit ears, LOL.

            ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS.
            I had it all, man!
            I HAD IT ALL!
            WOOOOOOOOO!
During the Seventies, all in color too.
I couldn't get HBO until I moved to a bigger city during 1980.
Don't need HBO with all the channels I have now.

Constantly searching for syndicated Star Trek episodes to complete the VHS collection until about 1981. Then I was a road warrior and had no time to watch anything until the 90's. Loved the friendly stews of AirCal, PSA, and SW. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi... Running through airports and having the plane held at the gate for one more paying passenger was a frequent occurrence. Capitalism at its best. SW copied PSA's passenger friendly attitude. Unfortunately Aircal and PSA were absorbed by American and USAir in '88 and that ended the passenger friendly times. And the feds took over airport security which destroyed the rest of airline customer service.

Used to fly for business and am now glad to be out of that racket. To get me on a plane again would have to be one HELL of an emergency - and even then it would be last resort.

It is so strange to hear myself saying as an old fart that those are the days most fondly remembered. There was something about the mediums of books, paperbacks with cool cover art, comics with cool art and all just full of ideas.....and then hours of silence with ones own thoughts just walking, riding bikes, and thinking.

Bradbury, Heinlein, Herbert, Asimov, Simak, I read everything I could get my hands on. And then Ayn Rand. Read everything and the newsletter.

And remember the limited TV would actually get turned off? What a generational laugh for no one to get the last of. There were how many generations of word of mouth? And then books came along. And then radio. Those that grew up with only radio laughed at new fangled TV and the corrupting influence on kids on the living room floor glued to the screen. Those kids came to laugh at mind numbed kids with Nintendos, satellites, joysticks, CGI, 300 channels of shit, and now 24/7 news opinion indoctrination.

I still prefer the physical book where the mind takes all the words and creates all the imagery. The mind can easily say nope, pause, I want to think about that one.

If that is being the dinosaur, dino, I'll take it. Hah! The philosoraptor! I like it!

Part of the reason chose a dinosaur moniker us that I'm an old has-been American patriot. Also because Allosaurus means "different lizard" because I'm a Christian and a retired state corrections officer who became enough of an Ayn Rand fan to want to land in The Gulch. Fascinated by dinosaurs too. Uh, and me am trained writer fulla me BS degree no did not hurt.

One of the things socialists don't want to talk about is the impetus for innovation lies entirely in personal gain. Even the early years of communism in Russia saw massive starvation because not only was there no skill occupying the farms any longer, but because all the proceeds were being confiscated, there was zero incentive for farmers to put in the time and energy to sow and harvest. The same principles apply in any business venture: human capital is powered by will; if you defeat the will you deprive yourself of human capital and societal advancement.

Wow. This turns into a paper all by itself.

    Great post ffa!

As Von Mises showed long ago, socialism must fail due to having no means for economic calculation, i.e., have no market. In a market individuals decide upon what things are worth by what they are willing to pay or to receive for in a trade. In a socialist system there is control of all property with government dictating how one uses his property, as in a national socialist system, or how the government will own and use all the property as in a communist system.
There was a story long ago about a man in the USSR who was able to fly a suitcase full of oranges a thousand mile and make a good profit on them due to the government's pricing system being arbitrary. There has to be a black market in socialist systems in order for people to keep from starving to death. That is the only kind of market that can exist under a dictatorship. Socialists believe that their arbitrary prices make a market. Liberty is necessary for a market.

I heard that story, it was the sixties I think. A very large country, price differences are inevitable. So small scale entrepreneurs do a bit of arbitrage, buy low here, sell high there. Happens everywhere except for the unique feature of fairly low value items, fruit and veg, carried as hand baggage on a commercial airliner. There would have restrictions on road transport and air freight, only gov departments allowed.

Capitalism automatically corrects for inappropriate directions that businesses take..Collectivist schemes have very little self correction, and therefore travel down bad paths for long times (Amtrak, US Post Office, Public Schools. etc)

And the worst of all, the Federal Reserve. 107 years of looting and destruction of value.

True. I am worried that if Biden gets in, we are really doomed as a country. We will self destruct under his 10t spending/taxing/inflation programs, and china will proceed to expand its influence and force us into bankruptcy

          I agree, term.
I wish I could think of a solution.
Buy more ammo now. (And learn to make your own.)

ammo manufacture can be a great way to make a litle money at home for trading. It does require finding casings, gunpowder, and fuses though. Lots of instruction videos on youtube

Hand loading takes patience, time, and an accurate scale. You can find reloading supplies around and I recommend a multi-stage loader to make it easier on yourself. I also recommend the use of primers rather than fuses. Having done my part with.45lc, .45acp, .45.70, etc., I highly recommend that you have no distractions while you reload.

30 years ago I learned by helping a friend reloading his ammo. He had a Dillon press. iirc, once it was set up he could make several hundred rounds of 9mm an hour at a great savings. I suspect cost of components may be much higher now.

If the casings were a problem, perhaps when someone wanted reloads, they would bring in their old casings, they could be resized and used again.

I have an older regrigerator for which they dont make the contol boards any longer. A really smart dude started a company where he sends you a refurb board that he fixed from the last customer, and when you get it, you send him back your board. He never has to find the nonexistent NEW boards.....

Yes, my friend was buying once fired casings and saving them to use again. That was the only re-usable part though. I think he had another friend who cast bullets from lead weights. A can of powder went a long way. Seems like there was use-by-date on primers, but I'm not certain. Can't recall what press he had, but I think it was one of these:

The Federal Reserve Thugs are the the facilitators of the greatest theft in the history of mankind. "Despicable" is too good of a word to describe the lot of them.

There is another interesting aspect, the role of Gorbachev.
With the limited information and views within his access he would have believed in that Marxist stuff, but there was a clear honesty in his character. He could tell the difference between what should have been and what was and is, between what the sacred books say will happen and what actually happens. That seems to be a stage that our deplorables have reached and not our intellectuals.

The older "deplorables" have lived in a much free-er country. We experienced the real benefits, but didn't realize how the education system had been infiltrated to destroy the morality, ethics, and rational thinking of the young.
