How Do You Like Democratic Socialism So Far?

In the eyes of Big Government progressives and socialists, what has happened over the past few months isn’t an unmitigated disaster with no historical parallel, it’s an opportunity. It’s a chance to condition the populace to accept the tenets of central government control and the equitable reordering of other people’s lives:

Last month, an eternity in COVID-19 time, I indulged in some wishful thinking. I predicted that the virus would lead to a resurgence of progressivism, in which the U.S. moves away from militarism and predatory capitalism and toward a greener, more socialist style of governance. The system I have in mind would be fully democratic, unlike China, and it wouldn’t abolish capitalism, which even China has embraced. It would simply give more to those who need it and take more from those who don’t. I’d like to take a closer look at this possibility, which a bunch of pundits have explored.

— John Horgan, blogging via Scientific American

Coronavirus today, Global Warming tomorrow. Then Climate Emergency after that. Every crisis will be presented as dwarfing the last one and anybody who disagrees or presents refuting data will be deplatformed as misinformation and dismissed as conspiracy nuts. But each one will move us toward the Holy Grail of progressivism, a government-knows-best technocracy that forces equality on everyone (else).

Multiple Supreme Court decisions overturning established precedent, such as school desegregation, recognition of gay marriage and interracial marriage, legalizing corporate political contributions, expansion of other 14th Amendment protections. Repeal of Jim Crow laws. Constitutional amendments ending slavery, ending racial and sex barriers to voting, ending alcohol prohibition. In other parts of the world, abandonment of absolute monarchy and privileges of the nobility, expansion of religious freedom, transition from feudalism to capitalism. A return to previous repressions is always possible, but this possibility does not justify predictions that it must happen.

I agree, ed, that a draft could be started easily by con-gress. Although the Dems appear to be the evil ones, most of the GOP in con-gress are little better and might be the ones who proposed it after another false flag op - like 911, for example.

Precedents are overturned and abandoned all the time. If they weren't, any semblance of a free society would not have emerged in the first place because of all the precedents established by previous government intervention.

But there is no need for a draft at this time. If there comes a day it is needed, it will get done again because the precedent has been established. That doesn't make it right but it will happen, because they can.

Never let a good crisis go to waste, and if you do not have one handy, make it. When you have a few billion in ill gotten gains, you can afford to hire all the clowns you need....

It looked like a video transmission problem to me, (but it could have been an embarrassing crash replaced with doctored video.)

Watched it, they panned the camera just as the Rocked booster landed...I wanted to see it land but they screwed it up.

I think it will be. They are too cowardly to fight. Trump knows this and he and others have been at the helm of this war to take back America.

Still the same ole 47%, maybe a little less as things get more ridiculous, more double backing on previous statements and more mistakes yet to be seen.

I don't know, Freedom, We are seeing just how cowardly, inept and stupid the deep state is in their epic attempt at a Heligean Dialectic on steroids.
Sure, they have quelled half the people some of the time but can't quell half or all of the people all of the time.
We saw the past few days, amongst the georgie sorass rioters, a push back against the standard view and some clear thinking on the part of those affected. Their observation of the idiocy of these riots, destruction and mayhem, their observations of the ineptness of their governments. The locals knew the trouble makers were from out of town and I wouldn't be surprised if they think their local governments are complicit.

So, is this the beginning of their ends or the End of our beginnings...I guess we'll see.

    PS...Memes up!...we sure do need a laugh.

Many people are taking action today (lawsuits, demonstrations), and I expect many elected public officials that have overstepped their authority will be voted out of office this November.

Well, from my standpoint, standing/sitting in Western Australia, I do not even like the democratic part.

Referring to CCP19, at first we heard a few factual news items.
Then the scares came on, each bigger and worse than before, unprecedented disasters forecast, the notorious Ferguson UK modelling applied to your home state. State and Fed governments fanned the scares, making statements about essential urgent tough measures, but waiting. They waited for the inevitable frightened populace who wrote to the newspapers about the value of life - cannot trade life against the economy, tough measures are demanded. So, they closed national and state borders (the right action but always too late) and imposed shutdowns, you know the story- Bondi Beach closed, fines and arrests for sitting alone on a park bench. Then the populace gets bored and broke and demands opening the economy. Then governments take measured and responsible steps, to return what should not have been taken. The outcome was far fewer deaths than forecast due to their brave and decisive action. (sarc)

Was it justified by the science?
I think, generally, no. But suppose it was, then what?
    Pragmatism v. values?

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem said she would not impose a forced lock-down on her people because it would conflict with her duty to uphold the state and national constitutions.

I have seen the same thing in several independent small businessmen after retirement. They worked hard all their lives paying and paying unconstitutional income taxes only to be finally enslaved.
Life is precious and appears even more so as you age, but is that kind of life worth living?
Being dependent on a manipulative government is very different than being dependent on family who love you.

Distrustful? Many citizens are like little babies - sitting and sucking their thumbs, wanting Uncle Sam to be their daddy. Too many.

Even before this crisis hit I had a few conversations with my dad. As he grew into the medicare years I watched him transform from an independent person to a puppy suckling helplessly off the government teet. Interesting to watch that transition because you then can see it all around you. Healthcare, safety, security, prosperity...A vast majority seem to be waiting for the government to provide all those.

On the other hand, if a government's actions become unpopular enough, this often discourages the government from attempting the same overreach again. For example, today there is little political support for bringing back the military draft.

Yesterday's actions were a stepping stone to today's actions, as today's actions will be to future actions. In a free society these actions should never have been taking but because they were they make possible all future actions. Even if we could accept the WWII actions as justifiable, which I don't, locking everyone down except those deemed essential by the government because of a virus sets a new presidence that will be used again in the future, simply because they can. We are going down a dangerous rabbit hole.

But are the distrustful willing to take real action?
I have seen too many freedoms taken away with no real action.
